Sothebys auction house expect it to go under the hammer for up to six (m) million...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe earliest surviving manuscript of Einstein's Theory of Relativity has gone on show in  London before being sold in New York later this month. \u003cbr/\u003eSothebys auction house expect it to go under the hammer for up to six (m) million U-S  dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eThe autographed, 76-page working manuscript in which Albert Einstein developed his  theory of relativity is regarded by scientists as one of the key foundations of modern  science.\u003cbr/\u003eMystery surrounds Einstein's manuscript - its existence was unknown until it was sold  in 1987 for a then record of over one (m) million U-S dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eHe first came up with the concept of relativity in 1905 and historians believe only three  papers from this early period have survived.\u003cbr/\u003eThis manuscript was written in 1912 for publication in a German scientific journal when  Einstein was at the height of his powers and is Einstein's earliest surviving and most  comprehensive explanation of the theory.\u003cbr/\u003eWritten for fellow physicists, it shows greater thoroughness than his other published  works. \u003cbr/\u003eIt provides an introduction to the subject of relativity and contains revisions, corrections,  crossings out and the cancellation of whole paragraphs and equations. \u003cbr/\u003eHis famous equation - E = mc 2 (squared) - appears in different forms.\u003cbr/\u003eEinstein originally added an extra algebraic figure - the letter \"L\" - before deciding it was  unnecessary and crossing it out.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery page shows extensive reworking - fortunately Einstein had clear handwriting and  even the crossed-out words can still be read.\u003cbr/\u003eAs such, the paper is a perfect treasure for science historians who can study how his  ideas developed.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you think about scientific manuscripts that may still exist in the private hands, this  perhaps is the most important of them all. It's the most important, certainly, of any  manuscript produced by Albert Einstein that still remains in private hands and of all the  great scientific leaps of the imagination over the centuries, we think of Darwin and  Galileo and Copernicus and Newton and Keppler and so forth, and think of the  manuscripts that may still survive from their extraordinary efforts, very little, if any, exist  in private hands so this is really a remarkable survival and it's remarkable it's available  for private sale.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: David Redden, Senior Vice President of Sotheby's\u003cbr/\u003eAt several points in the manuscript, Einstein points out the surprising consequences of  this theory and the difficulties of measuring and verifying his work.\u003cbr/\u003eEinstein made no attempt to preserve his papers until about 1920 - as such the  manuscript gives the most detailed review of relativity Einstein ever wrote. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause of this, modern scientists believe the worth of the manuscript lies in its  historic - not scientific - content. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"So it's very unique in that respect. It's one of the few things to have survived from that  period. And obviously as a working manuscript, it's very interesting to see the kind of  changes he made as he went along. So that said, obviously it is very interesting.  However, most of the important results of the paper were obviously published in a  journal.
