Zoom in shot of child after operation\u003cbr/\u003e50.Doctor examining a child\u003cbr/\u003e51.Close of the child\u003cbr/\u003eAn international medical team is providing free surgery to children born with facial deformities in India.\u003cbr/\u003eOperation Smile hopes to help children with cleft lips and palates in the Southern Indian city of Hyderabad.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Smile\" team consists of more than 45 medical professionals and non-medical volunteers from Canada, Philippines, Singapore, United Kingdom, and the United States, who are working with local Indian medical volunteers at Rainbow Children's Hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eCleft lips and palates, which can occur together , are a type of congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development during gestation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it can be successfully treated with surgery soon after birth.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of children in India are born with cleft lips and palates every year, but few take recourse to corrective surgery due to lack of awareness and poverty.\u003cbr/\u003e(note: the voluntary group, IMPACT INDIA estimates more than 30,000 children are born with cleft lips and palates each year.).\u003cbr/\u003eThe inhibiting cost of treatment , ranging from five hundred to more than two thousand US dollars , rules it out for most poor families.   \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it is worse for a disfigured girl child .\u003cbr/\u003eAlready suffering from discrimination in a society largely favouring boys , girls born with facial deformity are destined to live a miserable life , facing humiliation both inside their homes and outside.\u003cbr/\u003eThe stigma attached to the deformed facial structure is compounded by a widespread belief that it is a curse on the family , a sign of divine wrath. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen Ediga Nandini was born five months back in a village near Hyderabad, her family was devastated to see her face deformed with a cleft lip.\u003cbr/\u003eThe village doctor told the family that the cleft lip could not be treated.\u003cbr/\u003eNandini's family , like many others in India's remote villages , believed that the child's deformity was a curse - the result of using a metal implement to cut something during an inauspicious planetary eclipse, while her mother, Lavanya, was still pregnant.\u003cbr/\u003eLavanya's a poor, daily wage-worker , who did not know who to turn to for help, until she heard of the Operation Smile.\u003cbr/\u003eNandini was one of more than 160 children identified with the help of village-level groups , who were first registered and screened by the team of doctors at the Operation Smile camp.\u003cbr/\u003eThe screening process is followed by a full medical evaluation of the physical defects, and the speech problems of patients.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter conducting various other tests, including one for HIV, 125 children were shortlisted for surgery.\u003cbr/\u003e25 of these children were between the ages of 3 months to 14 years. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the doctors and volunteers of the Operation Smile charity , putting the smiles back on the faces of hundreds of children is an experience like no other.   \u003cbr/\u003eNikki Valencia , a plastic surgeon from Philippines , has been regularly taking part in these camps for the last 7 years.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel happy that I am able to help the patients here in India, at the same time I am also happy for the children that they will be able to go to school and won't be embarrassed by how they look, how they talk, \" Valencia said.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Operation Smile's first international medical mission to Hyderabad and the 13th international medical mission to India. \u003cbr/\u003eSince 2002, Operation Smile medical volunteers have provided more than 4,200 Indian children and young adults with free physical examinations, and more than 2,000 have received life-changing surgery during international medical missions.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a successful operation, Lavanya says her daughter's misfortune had been banished forever and she can now grow up with a beautiful smile .\u003cbr/\u003eFor Christina Philips, and her sister Santina , both volunteer students from UK , being part of Operation Smile has been an emotional experience despite language difficulties. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is a very emotional experience,both of us growing quite attached to the children, and we had loved them watching them whole way through, there has been no problem with the language barrier, had great fun running down behind whole day, and it is great to see that there are people here, who want to change their lives and make their lives much better,\" said Christina Philips.\u003cbr/\u003eFounded in 1982, Operation Smile, headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, is a worldwide children's medical charity whose network of global volunteers is helping improve the health and lives of children and young adults. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to their Web site, Operation Smile volunteers have treated more than 120,000 children born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities since they began.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's currently working in 51 countries. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to contributing free medical treatment, Operation Smile trains local medical professionals in its partner countries, and leaves behind crucial equipment to lay the groundwork for long-term self-sufficiency.\u003cbr/\u003eOperation Smile was founded by Dr. William P. Magee, a plastic surgeon, and his wife, Kathleen, a nurse and clinical social worker. \u003cbr/\u003eThe medical work underway in Hyderabad ends August 15th
