Close of the same\u003cbr/\u003eSix months after the Haiti's devastating earthquake, the country's shattered medical system is struggling to cope with the aftermath of the tragedy.\u003cbr/\u003eChallenged even before the disaster to meet the needs of the people, Haiti's medical system is dealing with the ongoing emergency with strained resources, lack of adequate facilities and a health ministry essentially bankrupt. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of amputees are still waiting for treatment, as new patients from accidents and illnesses add to the burden. \u003cbr/\u003eLong-term care for serious injuries has tapered off, but the system continues to struggle to address aids, tuberculosis, gastrointestinal infections, accidents, diabetes, especially in rural areas.\u003cbr/\u003eBut according to a report released by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) on Thursday, the situation - in terms of access to the medical services - is better now than before the 12 January 2010 quake. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Today, the medical system in Port Au Prince is better than before the earthquake\" said Stefano Zannini, MSF's Head of Mission in Haiti.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The access to free medical care is better than before, but we are still worried about the situation in the rural areas,\" Zannini said.\u003cbr/\u003eAid is not arriving in the same time and quantity in country areas compared to the capital Port-Au-Prince. \u003cbr/\u003eThat is  the case in Deschapelles, at the Albert Sweitzer Hospital in the country's lush Arbonite Valley, where hundreds come daily, seeking help.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 80-bed facility, a private hospital funded with donations from abroad, was swamped when the earthquake struck. \u003cbr/\u003eAdministrator Ian Rawson, son of the founders, recalls the crisis.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They kept coming, and kept coming and kept coming, and we had no idea. Again we couldn't tell what the scope of this was or what it was going to be, we just kept moving,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe facility became a triage center for patients from the earthquake zone which caused almost no damage in the area. \u003cbr/\u003eRawson said by noon the day after the quake, they had 800 patients. \u003cbr/\u003eHe added the hospital was still operating at full capacity, though not with as many in-house patients.\u003cbr/\u003eThe facility is one of the main sources of prosthetic limbs and services in the country, sorely needed in the aftermath of the earthquake which left thousands without limbs due to crushing injuries.\u003cbr/\u003eLittle Georgeline, just four-years-old, waits for a sore to heal so she can be fitted with a prosthetic leg. \u003cbr/\u003eFor others like Herminte Auscin, mother of three-year-old Huber, who was badly injured in a fall, the hospital is the only facility where help is available.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's very important. When I came with my baby he couldn't even talk, now that's he's been helped, he's better and he's speaking again,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, the facility is the only one within miles to provide care for premature babies, many of whom would die without the incubators in the neo-natal unit.\u003cbr/\u003eAid workers know that without investment in local care, their efforts will be wasted.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral agencies are working on projects to make the General Hospital a facility the city of nearly 3 (m) million can depend on.\u003cbr/\u003eThree-quarters of its buildings were damaged or destroyed, including the nursing school, where hundreds died.\u003cbr/\u003eFinancial woes continue.\u003cbr/\u003eJust a few striking medical residents who had not been paid since October have returned to work .\u003cbr/\u003eThe French government has pledged 30 (m) million US Dollars for rebuilding.\u003cbr/\u003ePartners in Health estimates it will cost 45 (m) million US Dollars a year to operate the hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eMedishare is seeking 18 (m) million US Dollars to keep its field hospital operating for the next 18 months.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week, a lightning strike sparked a fire and a day later rain flooded its tents.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is looking to move to a permanent facility.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the 9.9 (b) billion US Dollars pledged for Haiti's reconstruction could go toward infrastructure.\u003cbr/\u003ePartners in Health co-founder Dr Paul Farmer is the deputy U.N. special envoy to Haiti.\u003cbr/\u003eHis boss, former President Bill Clinton, co-chairs the commission overseeing reconstruction aid.\u003cbr/\u003eBut few donors have been willing to invest directly in infrastructure in the past, fearing corruption or - in the highly politicised world of development aid - not receiving the credit they'd get for running a project themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the international community sends aid, and doctors try to do their best with the resources that they have, a new worry has appeared, according to Zannini: the psychological trauma among the hundreds of thousands still living in tents under poor and unhealthy
