accompany students in the new school year. \u003cbr/\u003eEducation Minister Marietta Giannakou told a news conference in Athens that the ministry gathered comments and objections following the first edition of the book and presented them to the writing team.\u003cbr/\u003eThe team had \"accepted that there were historic inaccuracies, errors, gaps and oversights, and they agreed to proceed with the necessary corrections,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first edition received much criticism, especially from Greece's powerful Orthodox Church which argued that the book downplayed the church's role in sustaining Greek identity during four centuries of Ottoman rule. \u003cbr/\u003eGiannakou did not provide details regarding what changes had been made. \u003cbr/\u003eNational media have reported that changes will include references to the \"Cyprus problem\" instead of the \"Cyprus issue\" and to Turkish national founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk as the leader of Turkey's \"national struggle\" instead of its \"freedom struggle,\" as was originally written.\u003cbr/\u003eA major point of contention was the description of \"thousands of Greeks crowding in the port trying to board ships and to leave for Greece\" as a reference for what is known in Greece as the Asia Minor catastrophe. \u003cbr/\u003eThis has been reported to have changed to \"desperate Greeks forced to abandon their homes.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAntonis Liakos, professor of modern history at the University of Athens, said there has been an ideological war in Greek society since the 1990s over national
