Some companies are implementing an organisation-wide switch off of mobile phones and email to boost productivity. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a 24 hour society where we're all encouraged to be tuned in and turned on constantly.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut now companies are beginning to turn to creative methods to avoid employee burnout. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter years in which the ease of instant communication via e-mail and smartphones allowed bosses to place greater and greater demands on white-collar workers, some companies are beginning to set limits, recognising that successful employees must be able to escape from work.\u003cbr/\u003eQuirky, a New York based start-up ,helps bring ideas and inventions to the marketplace from digital piggy banks to baking trays. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company has instituted a ````blackout'' week once a quarter during which no one except customer service representatives are allowed to work, lest employees be tempted to check e-mail.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We instituted this blackout thing which is basically requiring that everyone take time off all at the same time, multiple times per year,\" says CEO Ben Kaufman, who figured he could bring the idea of re-invention to his own company. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We work really hard. We have these sprints to sort of launch these products at certain times of year and those are very taxing sprints. But at the end of them, there's a good window where we're just sort of getting back on our feet. And instead of just going right back into the next sprint, we figure, let's all take a deep breath together and then go into the next phase nice and well rested.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHaving the message come right from the top was important for Shirin Majid, the company's 39-year-old head of digital marketing, who laments not having enough time to spend with her husband and 9 month-old daughter, Ella. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 17 years of public relations work, she has yet to take a vacation devoid of that dreaded phone call from the office.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When I heard about it, I thought it was great. I think it's an amazing approach at kind of combating burnout really.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe says it boosts productivity, and helps keep momentum. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Being forced to take a step out of the work environment, it kind of refreshes your creativity, you can be a bit more objective about what you're doing, you can re-evaluate what you were doing right before blackout. It just gives you, gives your brain a rest, gives your body a rest, so you're ready to start again fresh and really have a strong end to the year.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut for once Majid was revelling in the phone and email \"holiday\". No one could call from the office because there was no one at work.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile many of her co-workers are spending their time travelling to exotic locations, Majid spent her blackout week at home looking after her daughter Ella.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says the company's policy has given her the \"luxury of time\" back before heading back to the frenetic pace of the office, where the company strives to make three brand new products every week.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of people are going to the beach, a lot of people are, a lot of people are going on far away vacations. I'm just planning on hanging out at home, hanging out with my baby, talking to my husband and just catching up on time. The amazing thing about blackout is that it gives you back the luxury of time when every day up until blackout is spent racing against the clock and trying to get everything done. And so I just want to spend blackout just chilling out and kind of taking a breath.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHome time for Majid involves cooking meals, and caring for her daughter. The luxury of time that working full-time for a tech start-up does not always afford. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We've had a few projects like putting shades up in the bedroom and other exciting things like that. I actually cooked for the first time in about six months maybe the other night which was really, really fun. The most mundane things have become fun,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eKaufman says time off helps people work better and smarter: \"I think what matters is the philosophy behind it which is if you work hard, you should be rewarded for that. And the belief that time off actually helps creativity and helps people work better and smarter and hours don't really mean anything.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAll that blackout-inspired creativity seems to be working for them so far: General Electric has just invested $30 million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eOther companies are experimenting with other strategies. In Germany, car maker BMW plans this week to unveil new rules to foster a management culture that values the limits of work hours and reach-ability. \u003cbr/\u003eVolkswagen turns off some employees' email 30 minutes after their shifts end. Goldman Sachs is urging junior staff to take weekends off. BMW is planning new rules that will keep workers from being contacted after hours.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd for employees like Majid, she says people are more productive after relaxation and rest time. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It shows faith in the employees. It shows faith that people won't take advantage of it, that people do need the reward of time and rest. And that it shows of the output of the company that this kind of enforced rest and taking a break actually contributes to the creativity and the inventive spirit of the company.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the global economic downturn that forced companies to trim workforces, and run extremely lean operations, employers are focusing on how to keep those who are left from burning out.\u003cbr/\u003eSurveys show that workers are more inclined to work, and come in even on sick days after seeing colleagues lose their jobs during the recession. \u003cbr/\u003eMany employees fear switching off at weekends and holidays, instead deciding to work on vacation, during dinner and in bed with the help of smart phones, laptops and tablet computers.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in the era of new technology, people have more data than ever to process - whether they ask for it or not. \u003cbr/\u003eInformation overload costs American businesses just under $1 trillion US dollars in employee time lost to needless e-mails and other electronic distractions in 2010, according to a study from the Center for American Progress. \u003cbr/\u003eThere's also the cost of replacing workers who leave because of the increased pressure. \u003cbr/\u003eThe study put the cost of replacing staff turnover at $75,000 per year.
