It\u003cbr/\u003ewas built around 4,500 years ago as part of a temple complex near\u003cbr/\u003ethe pyramids of Giza. According to Zahi Hawass, a scholar at the\u003cbr/\u003eEgyptian Antiquities Authority, the canal is thought to have been\u003cbr/\u003eused to channel water from the River Nile for the ritual bathing\u003cbr/\u003eof the body of pharaoh Chephren before burial. Chephren's pyramid\u003cbr/\u003eis the second largest of the three at Giza and archaeologists hope\u003cbr/\u003ethe discovery will tell them more about how the pharaoh was\u003cbr/\u003eprepared for burial. The canal is paved with limestone and around\u003cbr/\u003e50 meters (yards) of the waterway have so far been excavated.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough archaeologists have summised that such canals were used\u003cbr/\u003ein connection with the burial of the pharaohs, this is the first\u003cbr/\u003etime that any physical evidence has been found. The canal was\u003cbr/\u003ediscovered during the demolition of an outdoor theatre.\u003cbr/\u003eExcavations have also revealed small holes and a basin indicating\u003cbr/\u003ethat a tent may have been set up for purification rituals in front\u003cbr/\u003eof the Valley Temple, which is connected by a causeway to\u003cbr/\u003eChephren's pyramid.
