Mid of Robot Beatrice - UPSOUND (Italian): \"I hope to see you soon, goodbye\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Italian city of Turin is hosting two major alternative energy shows to mark European Union's Sustainable Energy Week.\u003cbr/\u003eItaly's first capital, and the current heart of the country's automotive industry, Turin aims to become the country's capital of green technology.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat better way of getting a guided tour of a technology show than by a friendly robot?\u003cbr/\u003eBeatrice is the user-friendly tour guide of \"Stazione Futuro\", an exhibition of renewable technologies at the Officine Grandi Riparazioni (OGR) in Turin - a masterpiece of industrial architecture in the heart of the city. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Dante's Divine Comedy Beatrice was the poet's trusted guide, here her namesake points out the star turns in the technology of the future - like this hydrogen-powered light aircraft:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are talking about Rapid 200 Fuel Cell, an aircraft powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. So it does not pollute.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHer voice may be a bit mechanical but it's the message that counts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Rapid 220 Fuel Cell aircraft, designed by the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Politecnico of Turin, demonstrates the possibility of emissions-free flight.  Power is supplied to its 40 kW propeller via 20 kW hydrogen gas fuel cells.\u003cbr/\u003eFor safety's sake the plane also has a second source of energy - a set of 20 kW lithium polymer batteries which can provide alternative power, or supplementary power during take-off and initial climbing. After the first successful flight tests the airplane has a 40 minute range and can reach a cruising speed of 150 km/h (93 mph).\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere, Beatrice can point the way to another of the Politecnico of Turin's high flying experiments - a solar-powered unmanned aircraft prototype, perfect for those hazardous flights above a hostile desert when the oil runs out.\u003cbr/\u003eBeatrice is just one of the stars of the show, with lots of radical ideas for future motor transport on display, like this FIAT MIO\" concept car, with joystick instead of steering wheel, and tracks to guide it along the way.\u003cbr/\u003eFuturistic maybe, but already in production is Fiat's electric Panda.\u003cbr/\u003eGetting power to electric autos is all very simple says Andrea Garbelli, customer service manager at energy supplier 365 Energy Italia:\u003cbr/\u003e\"To charge (your electric car) you put your card on the display. The charge point is connected to a server that checks your authorisation and unblocks the (charge point) door. Then you can charge (your car).\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut battery technology is still no match for conventional motors just yet.  Charging the battery takes some time as Garbelli explains:\u003cbr/\u003e\"If we have a 16amp electric charging point and a 18Kwh car battery like these ones the full charging takes from six to eight hours.\"\u003cbr/\u003eToo slow for some, but manufacturers at opposite ends of the consumer spectrum are getting on board the technology of the future.\u003cbr/\u003eLamborghini's Sixth Element concept car is made with advanced carbon-fibre technology - less weight equals less fuel consumption.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lamborghini weighs in at just 999 kilograms (2,202 lb) with an impressive power output of 570hp at 8,000 revs per minute.\u003cbr/\u003eFor more leisurely city commuters Piaggio's gas-electric hybrid USB Scooter certainly looks the part.\u003cbr/\u003eThe electric motor is attached to the rear wheel of the concept model. On battery power alone the USB can run for 50 km (31 miles) when driven at an average speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) - with zero emissions.\u003cbr/\u003eTurin has joined the European competition to reduce emissions by a minimum of 40 percent by 2020.  A big incentive of that challenge is to get a slice of the 11 billion euros (USD $15.9 billion) offered by the European Union to 30 \"smart cities\" which can demonstrate forward thinking in terms of the environment, mobility and a 'green' economy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe other big exhbition in the city is over at the former Fiat factory at the Lingotto complex, dominated by the red Olympic Arch from the 2006 Winter Games.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Energethica\" is also focused on sustainable transport technologies - like these tiny but nippy electric city cars called \"Biro\" made by Citygo of Turin.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the other end of the scale is the massive dual-fuel \"D-GID\" (Diesel-Gas Direct Injection) truck designed by Italy's Ecomotive Solutions. It can run on a mixture of diesel and natural gas, reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 20 to 40 percent - and cutting the fuel costs by around 15 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eSustainable technologies for the home are also a big feature of the Energethica show.\u003cbr/\u003eHousehold hot water and thermal energy comes from a hybrid PVT panel that is both a photovoltaic and thermal collector. It is claimed that this device can increase the electricity yield by up to 30 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eAn aluminium heat exchanger on the back of the collector unit transfers the heat released by the photovoltaic panels to a water/glycol closed circuit. It then dissipates the heat through an exchanger, thus lowering the temperature of the photovoltaic collector and increasing its efficiency.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's all serious stuff but, among the hi tech hardware, solar toys show children how alternative energy can make the world go round without damaging the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eAs if the anti pollution sentiment isn't clear enough, Robot Beatrice spells out the message:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Degradation, abuse, environmental crime. Come on, do not make that face!\"\u003cbr/\u003eSmart and affordable solutions for the house of the future are embodied in the 100K Home project.\u003cbr/\u003eThis completely sustainable house, designed by architect Mario Cucinella, is due to be built at Lodi near Milan. \u003cbr/\u003eCosting 100,000 euros (USD$ 144,000), the100 square metre (11,000 square feet) house delivers zero CO2 emissions.  That's thanks to an architecturally integrated photovoltaic system; special solar panels for capturing energy during the winter; optimum interior air circulation for the summer months; and all the other passive strategies required to turn the building into a self-sustaining machine for living.\u003cbr/\u003eLike so many other concepts on display the 100K Home project is futuristic, but one that can be made to work.\u003cbr/\u003eTurin is determined to lead the way in green technology. In the past the city was the first capital of the country from 1861 to 1865.  Now the city wants to regain a national leadership developing its green economy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition \"Stazione Futuro\" runs until November 2011 and is part of the national celebrations of
