These pieces of clothing have all been painstakingly restored at the at the laboratories of the Opificio...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThis jacket was once worn by a Samurai warrior in 17th century Japan. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is one of the items of clothing on display in Florence. \u003cbr/\u003eThese pieces of clothing have all been painstakingly restored at the at the laboratories of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure. \u003cbr/\u003eTo clean an ancient textile like this requires some delicate work.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir specialised staff preserve, restore and study fragile ancient textiles.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Opificio is one of the oldest institutes devoted to the preservation and restoration of art. \u003cbr/\u003eIts name literally translates as 'Workshop of Semi-Precious Stones', but they also restore textiles along with sculptures and paintings.\u003cbr/\u003eThe materials these textiles are made from are very vulnerable, and therefore need to be handled with extreme care.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to restorer Elisa Bracoloni, working with such fine fabrics is very different to the restoration work carried out on paintings or sculptures.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Textiles, being objects used every day, are subject to a more complex process during the years and especially during the life of the person who wears these pieces of art,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is because someone used them, wore them. Therefore a dress will show a degradation that another kind of artpiece will never have, and this depends for example on how the person wearing it would affect it (with his or her body).\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe degradation created by people who wore these garments is yet another challenge for restorers like Bracoloni.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, after almost three years of research and patient work, the Opificio's Department for Textiles has brought back to life a collection of precious pieces for a new exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're from a selection of ages and distant places.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to restorer Licia Triolo, the collection is meant to reflect the breadth of the pieces they work on.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The idea of the exhibit is to give a chance to those who are wondering and keen to know, to give them at least an insight into how vast and heterogeneous the collection of fabrics is and what one can find in a laboratory for the restoration of textiles,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the pieces on show is this veil which comes from Siena, Italy and dates back to the 13th century, while these shoes were worn by a 14th Century bishop and later saint, Saint Basso.\u003cbr/\u003eAll are now going on display at the Museum of the Opificio in Florence.\u003cbr/\u003eThese garments all presented different challenges to the restorers, so they used specific techniques for each and even used x-ray scans to locate where attention was needed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"One of the specific operations we carried out on these archeological works was the cleaning, that we had to do physically,\" says Susanna Conti, Opificio delle Pietre Dure Textile Department supervisor.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Also, thanks to multi-layered screenings that gave us detailed information, we had to intervene and take away those parts that did not match with the original works.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis exhibition charts thousands of years of textile craftsmanship.\u003cbr/\u003eThese sandals are from between 1435 and 1205 B.C. Egypt.\u003cbr/\u003eThis Samurai fighting dress was made for battle, but could also be worn during parades. \u003cbr/\u003eClothing restorers managed to date the waistcoat back to the 17th century.\u003cbr/\u003eThey could also link it to a battle which took place in the Edo period of Japan; The Battle of Shimabara in 1638.\u003cbr/\u003eIt includes a thin layer of metal inside the woven jacket, and is perhaps a forerunner for the modern day flak jacket worn by modern day journalists and medical workers. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is the clothing of a samurai, it is called Manchira, it's a sort of man's waistcoat,\" says Marco Ciatti, the director of Opificio delle Pietre Dure.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Even from the exterior what you can see is a luxurious object and one of great beauty, through x-rays we could see that inside there is a hidden metal coat, something made to protect the chest of the samurai.
