Lewis \"Scooter\" Libby, was convicted on Tuesday of obstruction, perjury and lying to the FBI in an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative's identity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe verdict comes on the tenth day of jury deliberations.\u003cbr/\u003eLibby was accused of lying and obstructing the investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity to reporters.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was acquitted of one count of lying to the FBI.\u003cbr/\u003eLibby is the only person charged in the case that grew out of an investigation into the leak of Valerie Plame's identity.\u003cbr/\u003ePlame is married to former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, an outspoken critic of the Bush administration's case for the Iraq war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe jury of seven women and four men was unanimous in returning a verdict on four of the five charges against Libby - \u003cbr/\u003eone count of obstruction of justice, two counts of perjury and one counts of making false statements.\u003cbr/\u003eLibby faces up to 30 years in prison, though under federal sentencing guidelines likely will receive far less.\u003cbr/\u003eLibby's defence team said he learned about Plame from Cheney, forgot about it, then learned it again a month later from NBC newsman Tim Russert. \u003cbr/\u003eAnything he told reporters about Plame, Libby said, was just chatter and rumours, not official government information.\u003cbr/\u003eSpecial Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said that was a lie but defence attorneys said it would be unfair to convict Libby in a case where so many witnesses changed their stories or had memory problems.\u003cbr/\u003eLibby had little reaction to the verdict. \u003cbr/\u003eHe stood expressionless as the jury left the room.\u003cbr/\u003eLibby's defence attorney, Theodore Wells, said he would ask the court for a new trial by April 13.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch requests are common after criminal convictions.\u003cbr/\u003eLibby was allowed to remain free while awaiting sentencing.\u003cbr/\u003eIf convicted on all five charges, Libby would have faced as much as 30 years in prison and 1.25 million US dollars in fines.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial examined allegations of Libby lying to investigators or to Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's grand jury about his conversations with reporters. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was not accused of outing a spy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial examined a politically charged case that drew attention to US President George W Bush's plan to push war in Iraq and the erroneous assertion that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction.\u003cbr/\u003eIt also gave the public a rare glimpse into Vice President Cheney's influential role in the West Wing and his behind-the-scenes lobbying for war.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was speculation that Cheney, who prizes secrecy, would be called upon to explain why the administration launched a campaign against Plame's husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson who emerged in mid-2003 as an outspoken critic of the Bush administration's case for the Iraq war.\u003cbr/\u003eWilson said his trip to Niger in 2002 debunked a report that Iraq was seeking uranium for nuclear weapons. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said Cheney would have heard Wilson's conclusions long before President Bush cited the report as a justification for war, because Cheney's questions had prompted the trip.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial also shone a spotlight on the close relationship between Washington reporters and the Bush administration, former New York Times reporter Judith Miller spent nearly 3 months in jail to avoid talking about her conversations with Libby.\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors described a methodical effort by Libby to conceal the fact that he discussed Plame with reporters in June 2003 while defence attorneys recounted a confusing, sometimes contradictory month of testimony that they believe is too shaky to base a conviction on.\u003cbr/\u003eThough Libby wasn't columnist Robert Novak's source, prosecutors say he feared he'd be charged with discussing classified information with other reporters.\u003cbr/\u003eSo, prosecutors say, Libby lied.
