SOUNDBITE: (English) Donald McKillop, amputee
"I lost my hand in 1977 due to an accident I had in 1969. I cut my wrist with a glass that was on the arm of a chair. I went to stand up and my hand went through the glass. The original cut was two stitches but there was a lot of glass left in my hand, which started to travel and come out different joints. For eight years they where taking out glass regularly. Two years before the amputation I wore a cok-up splint to protect my wrist but it broke one night due to wear and tare at my work, and my wrist broke. Ten months later the fractures had not even started to heal. So I had to sit down and discuss, my wife myself and the surgeon, discussing that an amputation was the only way out."
10. Close of hand grasping orange
Amputees are being offered a bionic hand which gives them new-found freedom.
Developed in Scotland, the I-Limb is already changing the life of one amputee.
Bionic limbs are no longer a thing of the future.
Touch Bionics, based in Scotland, is the first company in the world to produce commercially available bionic hands.
Though they may look like something out of a science-fiction film, these hands are helping real people.
The hands have been successfully fitted to patients throughout Europe and the United States.
One of the high-tech hands on offer is the I- Limb, the world's first available prosthetic hand.
Each hand has five individually powered motors, allowing users additional freedom.
The unique limbs are equipped with electrodes that sit on the surface of the skin.
They use a traditional two-input the central nervous system to the muscles.
Hill also says that what makes the bionic hands really unique is that they are able to adapt to different shaped objects.
McKillop says the hand is capable of performing all the tasks he trusts himself to do.
Only recently has McKillop been confident enough try his hand at driving.
Now he makes it look easy.
All he requires is a small attachment to his steering wheel that gives him extra control.
Yet, those using the bionic limbs also require them look realistic.
In the workshop a wide variety of plastic covers matching different skin tones are available.
Stewart Hill says matching people's skin tones is very difficult.
Hill also says some patients ask for customised covers.
The makers of the bionic limbs hope one day they will be able to design a whole bionic arm.
Stuart Mead says they already have a prototype.
Nonetheless for McKillop his bionic has already changed his life.
He says his new hand is allowing him to
