It's from Toronto.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the work of 21-year-old fashion designer Adrian Wu - part of a new breed of bright young Canadian fashion designers.\u003cbr/\u003eHis Spring/Summer 2012 collection features this green and white dress made from voile, a cotton fabric from France. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the collection is inspired by quantum physics and it debuted at Toronto's Fashion Week.  \u003cbr/\u003eWu used wire from Chinese lanterns to create the unique headpiece. It's meant to represent a three-dimensional model of a black hole, he claims.\u003cbr/\u003eWu's fashion has been showcased in high fashion magazines such as Flare and Chloe. \u003cbr/\u003eIn spite of his talent and determination, like many of his contemporaries in Canada, Wu dreams of one day working with some of the great fashion houses of Europe like Chanel or Christian Dior. \u003cbr/\u003eHis goal is to be the youngest designer to ever show at the Paris Fashion Week, but he laments the fact that he'll likely have to leave Canada at least for some time. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm at a point in my life right now where I have no idea, you know, where I'm going to be in even six months or a year,\" says Wu. \"I think I've done so much with my career and spent so much money that, you know, it's make it or break it, put it that way. So, I guess I'm still waiting for my big break.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWithout any government funding for fashion designers, up-and-coming Canadian designers like Wu must have deep pockets or generous financial backers to get ahead. An average collection costs Wu nearly $6,000 US.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Canadian designers start out at home but eventually move abroad to get a head start, often returning to Canada only once they've reached global prominence. \u003cbr/\u003eKnitwear designer Mark Fast, originally from Winnipeg, launched his own label in London. Montreal-born designer Erdem Moralioglu moved to London in 2000 to study fashion at the Royal College of Arts where he also launched his label, Erdem. \u003cbr/\u003eToronto designers and identical twin brothers Dean and Dan Caten, better known as DSquared2, moved to Milan and worked as designers for the house of Gianni Versace and the denim brand Diesel. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Wu skipped out of fashion school, choosing instead to teach himself the fundamentals of design and sewing.\u003cbr/\u003eHe crafted this pink floral patterned dress from his mother's kitchen curtains from the 1990s. After a Toronto Fashion Week curator rejected the piece, calling it \"too costume-like,\" Wu painted the logo, 'I'm not a costume' on the dress.\u003cbr/\u003eWu was one of 16 leading Canadian designers asked to create tutus for the National Ballet of Canada to help mark its 60th anniversary. Wu says he was inspired by the notion 'less is more' when creating the dress, which will be displayed as an art piece. \u003cbr/\u003eIn making this gold and brown dress as part of his Fall/Winter 2010 collection, Wu used upholstery and taffeta. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dress features Wu's personal style of inverted spine pleating, which adds shape and volume to his dresses in a seemingly organic yet unconventional way. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's called the dress 'The Princess's Rabbits,' and says the design reflects his passion for simplifying the bodice of the Victorian gowns of the 1800s. He says the design is flattering for women because it helps their bodies look beautiful. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a warm feeling. I feel very good in his dresses. They're really, really lovely, really special,\" says Toronto model Dalia Bibr. \u003cbr/\u003eCanada's cities such as Toronto are among the most multicultural and diverse in the world. Canadian designers are able to draw inspiration from countless cultures without ever leaving the country. \u003cbr/\u003eCanada's winters are long and cold and the country is more famous for its ice hockey than its catwalks - but designers are using the chill to their advantage.\u003cbr/\u003eCompanies such as Canada Goose have created a niche by designing trendy, down-filled parkas known for their quality, functionality and style.\u003cbr/\u003eStudents at Ryerson University's School of Fashion in Toronto - one of two undergraduate fashion programs in Canada - are working hard to complete their designs.\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty-eight year-old Elizabeth Chung has chosen vibrant Italian silk to create the garment of her dreams.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It changes and it starts to form and it becomes unpredictable,\" says Chung. \"So what I haven't finished that's part of the dress is that there's going to be sheer panels that are coming off the sides of this that when the woman walks down the runway, the sidewalk, it just starts blowing very, very unpredictably, just like watercolor kind of thing, or ink in water, if you've ever seen that.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eWhen it comes to haute couture, Canadian designers face another challenge,  because most consumers in the country spend money on European designs. \u003cbr/\u003eCanadian fashion design accounts for a fraction of one percent of the global market, according to Bob Kirke, executive director of the Canadian Apparel Federation.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin Canada, sales of women's clothing and accessories in 2010 amounted to over 15 billion dollars US, according to Statistics Canada. Sales of men's clothing and accessories totalled over eight billion US dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eBut by developing skills, networking and letting consumers know how they can make people look and feel better, the chair of Ryerson's School of Fashion, Robert Ott, says young Canadian designers can have a bright future. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The energy that comes from young creative minds is that anything is possible, so why should anybody tell them differently?\" says Ott. \"It is a competitive business. She's a dedicated fashion blogger and is committed to informing and inspiring readers about how to dress stylishly, colorfully and affordably on her website.\u003cbr/\u003eFatah has a growing following of fashion-conscious readings and she's becoming something of a trendsetter in Canada. \u003cbr/\u003eShe believes Canadian designers can look forward to better days. 20 years ago, she says Canadian musicians struggled to find a market at home. Today she says Canadian musicians are sought after at home and around the world. She believes the same transformation could happen in the fashion world, provided there is enough public and private support for Canadian designers. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough some people claim fashion is frivolous, Fatah argues it's anything but. In order for Canadian designers to be taken more seriously at home, she says people need to recognise that fashion is a way for citizens to express their culture, values and worldview. Fox's goal is to help top designers in Ghana access North American markets with their colourful fabrics and designs.\u003cbr/\u003eFox is making a documentary and using social media to get the word out about her work, known as the Complexity Project. Her stories highlight some of the issues that currently prevent African designers from reaching out to consumers around the world.
