Many protesters were decked out in labour union T-shirts or brandishing signs.
Union leaders are seeking a massive show of popular discontent, hoping to beat the September 7th protests that brought at least 1.1 (m) million people into the streets over reforms to the deficit-burdened pension system.
One protest in the southern city of Toulouse drew between 25,000 people - according to regional authorities - and 120,000, according to organisers.
Those numbers were similar to the September 7th protest.
Fewer than half of the Paris Metro's lines were working normally, according to the RATP public transit network, and about half of France's long-distance trains were being cancelled, according to the SNCF state-run rail system.
Many flights were cancelled at Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports, the Paris airport authority said. Post offices and even opera houses were hit too.
Security was higher than usual at some Metro stations, where soldiers armed with machine guns were on patrol. In recent days, top officials have warned that the risk of an extremist attack on French soil was at a record high.
The strikes are seen as a test for the conservative Sarkozy and are being watched elsewhere in Europe, as governments struggle to rein in costs with unpopular austerity measures after the Greek debt crisis scared markets and sapped confidence in the entire 16-nation euro currency.
Sarkozy has indicated he is willing to make marginal concessions but remains firm on the central pillar: increasing the retirement age from 60 to 62 and pushing back the age from 65 to 67 for those who want full retirement benefits.
As baby boomers reach retirement age and life expectancy increases in France, the conservative government insists it must raise the retirement age so the pension system can break even by 2018.
The leftist opposition sees retirement at 60 as a sacred symbol of France's social welfare system.
Opposition leaders also insisted any reforms must make more exceptions for certain categories of workers.
France's lower house of parliament has approved the pension reform, which goes soon to debate in the Senate.
Even at 62, France would have one of the lowest retirement ages in Europe. Neighbouring Germany has decided to bump the retirement age from 65 to 67.
The US Social Security system is also gradually raising its retirement age to 67.
On September 29th tens of thousands of demonstrators poured into Brussels, hoping to swell into a 100,000-strong march on European Union institutions later in the day and reinforce the impact of Spain's first nationwide strike in eight years.
All the actions sought to protest the budget-slashing, tax-hiking, pension-cutting austerity plans of European governments seeking to control their debt.
In an ironic twist, the march in Brussels comes just as the EU Commission is proposing to punish member states that have run up deficits to fund social programs in a time of high unemployment across the continent.
The proposal, backed by Germany, is expected to run into strong opposition from France.
Unions fear that workers will become the biggest victims of an economic crisis set off by bankers and traders, many of whom were rescued by massive government intervention.
Several governments, already living dangerously with high debt, were pushed to the brink of financial collapse and have been forced to impose punishing cuts in wages, pensions and employment - measures that have brought workers out by the tens of thousands over the past months.
Also on September 29th airlines cancelled flights, picketers blocked trucks from delivering produce and police clashed with protesters as Spanish workers staged a general strike to protest against austerity measures imposed by a government struggling to slash its budget deficit and overcome recession.
In central Barcelona, students burned a police car and blocked streets with rubbish containers, and officers fired rubber bullets, Labour Minister Celestino Corbacho said.
Four people were detained in the clashes.
Meanwhile, workers marched peacefully through central Madrid in a demonstration organised by trade unions UGT (General Workers Union) and CCOO (Comisiones Obreras).
Picketers roamed the streets of the capital, trying to go into offices with pamphlets explaining to workers why they should not work.
At midday, a group of about 100 strikers blocked Madrid's Gran Via, a major commercial thoroughfare, and merchants shuttered their shops when picketers approached.
Buses were extremely scarce in central Madrid, garbage went uncollected and even electricity consumption nationwide was down by nearly 10 percent early in the day.
Eighty percent of Spain's high-speed train trips were cancelled, all mid-distance were scrapped and only 25 percent of commuter trains were running.
Tourists in Madrid were busy finding things to do amid the chaos.
While some complained about closed shops, loud protests and dirty streets, others offered support to the worker's pleas.
Tourist attractions like the famous Prado museum remained open.
The national flagship carrier Iberia said it expected to operate only 35 percent of its scheduled flights as some air traffic controllers and ground crews honoured the strike call.
Ryanair said it cancelled all its domestic flights in Spain and most international flights to and from the country.
Stranded passengers had to wait for hours to catch their flights.
Many tourists were forced to sleep at Majorca's airport as their flights were delayed or cancelled.
Spain's first general strike since 2002 marks a bitter split in the usually close relationship between unions and Spain's Socialist government, which is struggling with a 20 percent jobless rate and a bloated deficit that has prompted market worries it might end up in the kind of dire straits that forced a massive bailout for Greece.
The stoppage was called to protest austerity measures that include wage cuts for civil servants, a freeze on most retirement pensions and labour market reforms that make it easier and cheaper for companies to lay people off.

<div class='action-container
