Various of people filling water bottles from river\u003cbr/\u003eScores of people injured in Saturday's South Asia earthquake could face death, severe illness from infection, unnecessary amputations and\u003cbr/\u003elifelong disability if they don't get the medical care they urgently need, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN health agency estimated that 50,000 people have been wounded, with injuries such as broken and crushed limbs, and head, spinal and chest trauma. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said the number of doctors and other health workers needed to at least double and even triple in some places to cope with the number of injured.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our worry is the spread of infection, infectious diseases like cholera, measles, meningitis - also malaria we have to think about,\" said WHO official Sami Ullah. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Balakot, there's a dire shortage of tents for hospitals, with patients forced to lie outdoors, exposed to the cold and rain.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, dozens of dead people and animals lie decomposing in the streets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe director of the Balakot Civil Hospital said increasing numbers of people were complaining of sore throats, gastroenteritis and chest infections.\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty-six hospitals have been destroyed or are too dangerous to keep open, and most of the 600 health clinics in the affected area are thought to have been destroyed or severely damaged. \u003cbr/\u003eWith many medical sites already overwhelmed, injured people in some of the more remote valleys haven't yet been reached.\u003cbr/\u003eIn its appeal for medical aid, the WHO said that the type of doctors most needed were general practitioners with experience in emergency medicine and basic surgery. It said paramedics and public health specialists were also desperately needed.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's feared that dirty water and lack of sanitation could lead to outbreaks of diarrhoea-related diseases, such as dysentery and cholera. The risk of such outbreaks is much higher when people settle in large, crowded camps or shelters.\u003cbr/\u003ePublic health specialists are being sent to large communities and camps to help with such issues to minimise the risk of outbreaks.\u003cbr/\u003eClean water, whether bottled or through chlorine tablets, is desperately needed, WHO said.\u003cbr/\u003eVaccination rounds against measles and tetanus are also planned. \u003cbr/\u003eTetanus is a life-threatening infection that can develop after cuts from dirty debris.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
