simmered on. \u003cbr/\u003eHis birthday comes just days before the fifth anniversary of his election as Pope, and while some analysts disagree about his physical state, most would agree Pope Benedict is under enormous pressure from one of the worst crises facing the Catholic church in decades, after revelations about priests who molested children and church officials who covered it up.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, the Pope finally broke his silence on the clerical abuse scandal, complaining that the church was under attack but adding that \"we Christians\" must repent for sins and recognise mistakes.\u003cbr/\u003eVictims of clerical abuse have long demanded that Benedict take more personal responsibility for it, charging that the Vatican orchestrated a culture of cover-up and secrecy that allowed priests to rape and molest children unchecked for decades.\u003cbr/\u003eThose demands have intensified in recent weeks as the Vatican and Benedict himself have been accused of negligence in handling some cases in Europe and the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eBenedict''s comments, a day before his birthday, were his fullest allusion to the matter since he sent a letter to the Irish faithful on March 20 concerning what Irish government inquiries have concluded were decades of abuse and church-mandated cover-up in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his letter, Benedict chastised Irish bishops for failures in leadership and judgment, but he took no responsibility himself or for the Vatican, which many victims have blamed for being more concerned about protecting the church than Catholic children.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Monday, the Vatican posted on its Web site what it claimed had been a long-standing church policy telling bishops that they should report abuse crimes to
