Very telling, they go straight to the heart.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Andrew Robison, Andrew Mellon Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings, National Gallery of Art\u003cbr/\u003eMatthais Gruenewald is known as being one of the most expressive of the German artists of the Renaissance.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly about thirty of his drawings survive, with one in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eAn astounding eight are being shown in this exhibit.\u003cbr/\u003eGruenewald drew in chalk allowing him to model forms as softly and smoothly as he could paint.  \u003cbr/\u003eHis works show an intense interest in depicting extremes of human emotion.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, widely acknowledged as the greatest German artist of the Renaissance is Albrecht Duerer.\u003cbr/\u003eHis early training as a goldsmith is evident, but it does not limit his scope.  \u003cbr/\u003eOn the contrary Duerer explored an extraordinary variety of subjects - mythological, landscapes, religious themes and portraits.\u003cbr/\u003eThe most important Swiss artist of his time was Hans Holbein the Younger.\u003cbr/\u003eHis works span preparatory designs for stained glass and building facades through to an exploration of religious themes.\u003cbr/\u003eHis concern for depicting architectural space as well as human emotion is evident in \"The Holy Family\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Studies of Heads and Hands\" have a very modern look to them, underscoring the futuristic view of an artist working nearly five hundred years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibit will continue through until January 9, 2000.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington, D-C, U-S, Recent \u003cbr/\u003e1.
