The Mexican-born \"Birdman\" director jumped right into his next film, the upcoming western thriller \"The Revenant.\"\"Well you know fortunately I was immediately, next day, working on 'The Revenant' and I was shooting in the mountains and I literally just got finished shooting a couple of weeks ago. So it was a very healthy state of work without having a lot of time to really see my own belly,\" he said. \"So if I look tired it's because I'm tired, but I have been working. No rest at all,\" he said on the red carpet in Culver City. \"The Revenant\" stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy and opens December 25.\"It was a great experience for all of us,\" said Inarritu of the film. \"It was a real journey. We were shooting in remarkable places that I really looked for four years, where the landscapes really are characters too. And it was long and intense experience, but it was a wonderful one for everybody. So we will see.\"Inarritu won the Academy Award for best director, best original screenplay and best picture for \"Birdman.\" He was honored Tuesday (2 JUNE 2015) with the Vanguard Leadership Award from the Sundance Institute. Though the event celebrated independent artists and filmmakers, Inarritu admitted he's conflicted about the terminology. \"Well I have always been very lucky to do what I like to do and do it freely and independently. So in a way I share that that spirit, you know? But I guess you know there is no independence in that sense,\" he explained. \"I mean I always had a conflict saying 'independent filmmaker.' We all know it's an interdependent world. Nobody can really do anything without any other people. But what I'm saying is the origin of the thing is that it's one voice that is not conflicted with other interests than really what that voice meant to say, you know?\"\"Selma\" director Ava DuVernay was on hand to present the award and gushed about the \"debonair\" filmmaker.\"I'm presenting to Alejandro.
