STORY-LINE:As night falls at Haveli Dharampura , a restored Mughal-era mansion in the older part of the Indian capital, local dancers fill the air with the thumping sounds of ringing anklets as they move to the beats of classical Indian music. The show is reminiscent of a time long gone, when courtesans from the Mughal period performed under jharokas, or arched courtyards, for an audience that watched from a distance. The restored mansion-turned-hotel opened to the public in March this year.Visitors have been trickling in to rediscover the lost magic of a a bygone era, complete with the historical surroundings of one of New Delhi's most popular but congested tourist areas – Chandni Chowk.\"Taking the cycle-rickshaw from the train station and then walking in the narrow alleys, and then entering this wonderful building which is just surprising,\" says Dario Hidalgo, a tourist from ColombiaThe mansion dates back to 1887 AD , its owners say.Zainab Kakal, a tourist from Mumbai, says restoration projects like this would give the area a distinct brand identity.\"In marketing you would say, you know, it's like giving something a brand, and a brand identity. And places like this will give Chandni Chowk that identity,\" she said.Haveli Dharampura is a short walk from New Delhi's iconic Jama Mosque, along the narrow alley called Gali Guliyan. But prior to nearly a decade of restoration work at the mansion, it wasn't safe to even walk on the cracked courtyards that were falling under their own weight, explains Siddhant Goel, the owner's son, who helped his father Vijay Goel in the restoration project. Dharampura, much like other old mansions in the area, had been compartmentalized to house multiple families, making it much heavier than the original building.A narrow approach through cramped-lanes – a signature of the old city – meant whatever went in or out of the mansion had to be carried by hand for at least half a kilometre. Combining the expertise of an architect who was working on a restoration project at the historic Red Fort, with the local know how of a repairman from Chandini Chowk, the Goels were able to revive the rubble.Restoring the Mughal-style arches and marble-work that resembles some walls in the Taj Mahal, involved travelling to other states in search of material and craftsmanship that, according to Goel, is almost impossible to find.\"The first three years actually took in just laying down the foundation, because the entire foundation was falling off, Goel says \"The next two years went into making sure the building stays strong and do conservation and restoration work. The architectural beauty you can see here, that is the work of the last six months.\"With rooms starting at a little more than $100 for a night, Haveli Dharampura is now a plush hotel packed with amenities like central air-conditioning and an elevator – both modern additions to a traditional looking building. Dharampura also houses two reservation-only restaurants, a small museum and a secret passage leading to a hidden-safe. The walled-city of Chandini Chowk today is mishmash of the past and present.Among the congested, narrow lanes and a bustling market, one can still catch glimpses of its glorious past. Decaying facades of centuries old havelis, or Mughal-era mansions, and their once-upon-a-time grand entryways, tell a story of the Delhi that used to be. \"These havelis were big mansions of rich people,\" said Rohan Patankar, an architect and curator of the Delhi Walk Festival.\"It actually functioned like one unit where rich people were living with people who were their, sort of, helpers and staff, and they would sustain the ecosystem economically and socially as one unit. And that's what was very different from how we live today where the richer people live together and the poorer people live together,\" he says.Old Delhi is now a commercial hub.Godowns and warehouses occupy every tiny bit of available space, and old markets ensure the narrow streets are always clogged with traffic. Most haveli owners have left the old city for the new one, but still depend on their shops or warehouses in Chandni Chowk as an important source of income. \"It just became too inconvenient to be in Old Delhi, you know. Like, all of New Delhi became more convenient, Patankar explains. \"And functionality mattered more than charm.\"Goels believe restoring heritage mansions in Chandni Chowk will help bring back the charm and functionality to the area.
