Various of Haileybury Tianjin campus  LEADIN: The demand for foreign schools in China is booming as more parents plan to send their children abroad for university.Top overseas schools are opening more Chinese campuses to cater for parents who want their children to benefit from an international focussed education. STORYLINE:Three soldiers from the People's Liberation Army slow march to the Chinese national anthem, in a setting designed to replicate an exclusive western school.It seems incongruous, but this is fast becoming the new norm.This is Haileybury College, a school with one hundred years of tradition - in Australia.The crest, the uniform and the school anthem however come from a very different background.Haileybury College is catering for the growing number of Chinese parents who are keen for their children to be given the sort of education that will get them into the best universities around the world.THe CEO of Haileybury's China campus, Nicholas Dwyer says: \"The values are very much the Haileybury values, but in a Chinese dress to some extent. And even with the uniform which is the Haileybury uniform, the symbolism that comes through in an assembly like this morning, it's done in a very Chinese way because the Chinese way works.\"It established here on the outskirts of the northern city of Tianjin three years ago.Enrollment this year has doubled and the school is considering opening another campus to meet soaring demand, despite the cost of education here.Haileybury costs up to $28,000 USD a year. It has twin towers built to replicate those of Eton, the school where British princes William and Harry attended.International schools from outside China are booming as parents become more affluent and can afford alternative education.Many schools from around the world are opening campuses in China and they often charge higher fees.Getting into China's best public high schools can be difficult because the competition for places is very tight.Some parents are opting out of Chinese system, despite their children being high academic achievers. Schools like Haileybury are seen as less stressful and more enriching by a growing number of parents. The International School Consultancy monitors school trends worldwide and says demand among Chinese for English-language schools is high.More than 150,000 Chinese students have enrolled in international schools and the consultancy expects the number who are willing pay expensive school fees is growing, even though it's a small percentage of the country's population. Marketing executive Cheng Rui is touring the school with his 9-year-old son who's been studying at local school affiliated with a Chinese university.He saw his son feeling constant pressure and noticed he was unable to communicate with foreigners on a family vacation to the United States and Canada despite being on a bilingual program. Cheng says: \"He thinks that by playing with the kids at his age in international schools, it will be more enriching and characteristic for him in terms of developing his interests and he will be under less pressure than students at traditional Chinese schools. By taking these elements into consideration comprehensively, I chose the place for him to study.\"China's top public high schools are often criticised as excessively test-driven. Before their teenage years, children study long hours for entrance exams, often with costly private tutors. At the end of high school, students take the notoriously difficult Chinese college entrance exam, the Gaokao, where a bad score can relegate a good student to a lesser university.A massive government-ordered expansion of higher education over the last decade has produced many marginal colleges whose degrees count for little. That makes an overseas education even more attractive. Dwyer agrees: \"The first thing and by far the most important certainly for the older students is the path way to overseas universities. Followed by really, getting their kids to be able to speak English well and naturally, and then thirdly a different type of pedagogy, one that perhaps it's not so exam focused or whatever.\"Western schools in China advertise themselves emphasising critical thinking over memorising facts and offer classes based on the International Baccalaureate or other exams. Once limited mainly to foreign children, international schools have been allowed during the last two decades to open campuses for Chinese students jointly with local companies. And while the Chinese government has sought to tighten its ideological control over textbooks and limit perceived Western influences, the international schools offer new teaching methods and options for its middle class. Not all parents agree.Li Wei's daughter is taking the Gaokao and she says: \"Taking Gaokao is a challenge to her study skills, and it's also a challenge to her psychological quality. Because there's a great pressure on kids who're going through Gaokao.\"China's economic boom has allowed many to afford private education options.But Zeng Xiaodong, a professor at Beijing Normal University points out that international schools remain out of reach for the vast majority of Chinese. She understands what drives parents to seek out schools like Haileybury although she argues this won't solve the inequity of the overall system.\"Many of the experts studying education think we should take action in the near future, because many of our best students are going overseas. Please don't think that way. It is a good thing for us, and also it is inevitable. It is a certainly a result of development that people have diverse preferences for their children's education,\" says Zeng.Haileybury's first class of about 25 students graduates this fall.
