The city is routinely choked with pollution, which the tower's Dutch designer hopes to tackle with his innovative metal structure.STORYLINEIn a city where smog routinely blankets the streets, a Dutch artist has offered an eccentric solution by creating a 7-meter (23-foot) metal structure that takes in smog and breathes out cleaner air.  In Beijing's famous 798 arts district, Daan Roosegaarde has unveiled his newly designed Smog Free Tower comprised of 45 silver plates. The tower contains an air-purifying machine that catches pm2.5 particles and turns them into pitch black powder. \"I think one, the smog free project is the solution on a local scale, and central government is very interested to make hundreds of them through out China for the children playing outside, so that's one,\" says Roosegaarde. \"And two, we are engaging with the local community, to make more smog free solutions and also to change their mentality.\"He says he hopes that people will be inspired by the tower to share creative thinking in countries that are grappling with heavy pollution. The idea for the tower was inspired by a visit to Beijing three years ago when he saw the view outside his window blocked by the thick gray haze. According to the latest report from WHO, China is the world's deadliest country for outdoor air pollution. Government researchers have linked the pollution to higher rates of lung cancer and on particularly bad days, schools keep children inside during playtimes. Unveiled on a relatively good day by Beijing standards, Roosegaarde uses a remote control to raise part of the tower's panels into the air to show the machine inside. \"Basically the design was inspired by the Chinese temple, so it is sort of like a clean air temple, so the polluted air comes in from the above, gets cleaned on the nano level, the ultrafine particles,\" says Roosegaarde. \"And then the clean air comes through here, and actually goes into the area surrounding us. Creating areas which are around 75% more clean than the rest of the city. So we are now in one of the cleanest spot in Beijing.\"Ma Zhongqing, an information technology worker, says the tower reminds him of a larger version of the air purifiers many Beijing residents keep running in their homes during winter.He is captiously optimistic that it will make a difference. \"It being exhibited here makes people feel that they need to pay attention to this kind of thing,\" says Ma. \"But a lot of problems need to be solved while it's being put into use.\"Roosegaarde claims that the tower catches particles at a rate of thirty thousand cubic meters per hour which could clean a size of a soccer stadium per day. However, Roosegaarde's team don't dump the particles that the tower collect, instead they are turned into rings. \"So here you see the cube that sort of floating in mid air, this the incredibly disgusting small particles that we harvested from a thousand cubic meter of clean air. Compressing it and then sort of shielding it because it is very polluting,\" says Roosegaarde. \"And we have wedding couples purchasing this as sign of true love, giving it to each other. And actually the finance we made when selling the jewelry helped us to build one of the first smog free towers.\"Roosegaarde claims that by sharing the smog free jewelry, people donate 1000 cubic meter of clean air to the city. 27-year-old Shi Xue, a law student who is now studying at the Yale University, says \"I love it. I think it is meaningful to place a ring in this such a stressful place\". The tower began running in Beijing one week ahead of its formal unveiling.
