The Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) welcomed more than a 100,000 visitors last week in the UAE's capital. Companies and individuals frequent the show to buy weapons and hunting rifles, camping gear, and even drones. But the exhibition has more than just the commercial aspect, it highlights the culture and heritage of the UAE. \"We want to increase awareness among Emirati hunters, we want them to hunt using captive breeding falcons instead of wild falcons, in order to preserve them. We also want to raise awareness on over-fishing and teach them about hunting seasons,\" says Abdullah Al Qubaisi, the director of ADIHEX.Trapping or importing wild falcons in the UAE is illegal, and hunters must use farm-bred falcons for the sport. Dozens of falcons were on display at the exhibition, some selling for over 100,000 dirhams (27,000 US dollars).\"This sport, whether falcon hunting or fishing, is a part of our heritage and tradition, here in the UAE and in the Gulf,\" Al Qubaisi adds. And among all the rifles and hunting gear, lie the oddities and wonders of ADIHEX; for example a 25,000 US dollar gold-plated bow and arrow, with rubies and sapphires alongside handmade rifles, a large search and rescue helicopter, and exotic ivory mammoth tusks. The rare tusks are being sold by a German company that excavates them from the Arctic Circle in northern Siberia. They can sell for more than 100,000 euros (112,000 US dollars) per tusk. Mammoths are part of the elephant family but became extinct around 4,000 years ago.\"This is absolutely different material, I can't emphasise this enough because people always intermix elephant ivory with mammoth ivory. Mammoth, what you're supposed to know is, a mammoth they went extinct, these are extinct species and therefore they're not protected by the CITES,\" Sergey Gournalnik from Mammoth Ivory Trader explains. CITES is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. But for those who weren't looking to spend hundreds of thousands of dirhams, they could instead attend workshops on the handling of Arabian horses, listen to traditional Emirati music or watch the Abu Dhabi Police K-9 unit show and marvel as the dogs showing their obedience and physical prowess.Abu Dhabi - 6 October, 2016 1.
