So a big reason for people coming here is it's a bit quirky. Obviously people here (say) oh boardgame cafe what's that and then they start thinking of those games they played when they were young. So they come here and they can, they can play all those games.\"Chapman says although classics like Scrabble and Monopoly are frequently played, there's huge interest in a new breed of craft games. \"But then we have another side to the cafe where we have all of the games that people would never have heard of before, so a little bit more strategic, a bit more fun quirky and so we have people who come here to play those games and especially people who, you know at home probably don't have a lot of games of their own, you know in their own homes. So they will come here because we have seven hundred,\" he says.Board games have been a central to social interaction and entertainment throughout the ages. This is Senet, one of the oldest known games.According to historians it was widely played in ancient Egypt. This one is part of an exhibition of board games through the centuries at the Museum of Childhood in London.Draughts was developed long after chess, the original war game where kings and queens fight to the death with their armies.Snakes and Ladders is one of the most common race games which originated in India in the thirteenth century. It began as an adult game full of moral overtones, but by the time it arrived in the West it had become a children's game. This exhibition was curated by Catherine Howell, the museum's manager. She says: \"The oldest game we've got in the exhibition is the game of Senet from ancient Egypt and we know that goes back to at least 3000BC and this was a game that was played by everybody. It was probably just a simple race game, we're not actually sure of the rules, but a simple race game and in fact a lot of early games and a lot of games that people still like to play today are just simple race games and that's the idea, it's the competitiveness isn't it, that's how you win.\"This is 'Go' another ancient game which originated in China.Though it's based on the very simple idea of blocking off your opponents counters with your own, the potential variations are so complex that until recently it was not possible to program a computer to play it.Howell says the heyday of board games began at the start of the twentieth century, when new manufacturing techniques allowed the mass production of games. She says: \"You know companies were able to churn out cheap games basically. People were looking for things to do they had more time on their hands, more leisure time and so this combined in this explosion really of board game playing that happened.\"It was about this time that the original game of Monopoly, then called the Landlord's appeared.Howell says: \"I regard there as being four modern classics and that's Cluedo, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and top of the heap Monopoly.\"She explains: \"A lot of it is marketing, I think, very clever marketing by Parker Brothers, I mean the game itself is much older than when the Parker Brothers produced it first in 1930. So it dates back to the early 20th century to a game called the Landlord's Game which was actually designed to teach the evils of taxation and then of course the game then becomes a completely capitalist thing that everybody wants to win as much money as possible.\"As the winter night draws, Draughts Board Game Cafe begins to fill with people selecting games for the evening. There are seven hundred to choose from here.Chapman says: \"It kind of takes away part of what makes socialising fun when you're constantly checking technology and so there's kind of like this rebellion, I feel, like against digital gaming, digital technology and that where board games are perfect because they offer like full on interaction with people, people like friends and also it's fun. The whole point of board games is that they're fun.\" Howell doesn't believe these games will ever replace the constantly developing electronic games: \"It's not exactly an antidote to video games because they're still popular as well, but people are rediscovering that sort of face to face interaction.\"The exhibiton at the Museum of Childhood will continue until 23rd April 2017.Meanwhile at Draughts the appeal of niche board games to the Millennial consumer shows no sign of waning.London, UK - 1 November 20161.
