Various of meditation training class LEADIN:The Zika virus - linked to severe neurological disease and brain deformities in babies - dominated the Health News headlines for much of the year.People's fears were heightened by the fact that the Olympic games were held in Brazil, drawing athletes and tourists to the centre of the disease outbreak.STORYLINE: At the start of the year doctors in Brazil detected the Zika virus in the amniotic fluid of foetuses diagnosed with brain deformity microcephaly. It was yet more evidence the virus crossed the placental barrier and infected the foetus. The shock and fear caused by the outbreak in South America has spread.Doctors and scientists have yet to develop any medical protection against the virus. The greatest concern for the world as a whole was how the Olympic games in Brazil in the summer might allow the complications of Zika, the microcephaly and the Guillame Barre Syndrome, to become global. Some athletes like golfer Rory McIlroy pulled out of the games and doctors learning that the virus could survive in sperm warned women to stay away, or delay pregnancy. The most recent update from the World Health Organisation shows the \"geographical range of Zika virus has expanded rapidly, with mosquito-borne transmission of the virus reported in 67 countries predominantly in the Americas Region but more recently spreading to countries in Africa and Asia.\" There is still no vaccine that can protect against Zika.Scientists working for the Eliminate Dengue campaign, say they have developed a technique to inject a virus into mosquito eggs with a bacteria which blocks viruses like Zika and dengue developing in Aedes mosquitoes. The plight of infants around the world was highlighted with a report in the doctor's journal the Lancet claiming 2.6 million babies around the world were uneccessarily stillborn. The majority of deaths are in the poorest nations, but the report also warned richer countries failed to address the problem because too many medical professionals worldwide believe it's the inevitable result of genetic abnormalities.Author Hannah Blencowe from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said: \"I don't think it takes any country off the hook. In all countries there are stillbirths that are preventable through improving women's health and the care that we give to women.\"It sounds astonishing, but it wasn't until recently that doctors agreed that premature babies could actually feel pain. The consideration has spurred doctors in the United States to search for better ways to assess and treat pain during tests and procedures on babies born early. It used to be thought that these infants were too young to feel pain, but experts say - even now - pain relief efforts for newborns and especially premature babies are often inadequate. UK scientists investigating miscarriages in pregnancy believe they may have discovered why some women have them. The team at Coventry hospital are still researching whether a simple procedure to scratch the womb wall will increase the growth of stem cells in the lining and could help increase a woman's chances of having a baby.In China the change of the one child policy led to an explosion of child related products. Women now contemplating a second child were considering IVF.More babies means more maternity services and so it's hasn't been surprising to see maternity matrons brushing up their neo-natal skillsIt's believed the policy change could eventually increase the population with an estimated three million extra newborns per year. It's not just babies who have focussed the attention of the medical profession in China. We've seen how Beijing's elderly are being digitally tracked to improve services and ensure their safety. Now the over-80s can be monitored when they take a bus, see a doctor, or spend money. Every swipe with the Beijing Connect card sends details to massive database filled with information about the capital's older population. The elderly in rural areas often have difficulty getting to see a doctor, but in France this year we saw how technology was changing that with the introduction of the Medical Booth. All the details of the patients heart, blood pressure and other details are directly available to the doctor who may be miles away.Earlier this year scientists launched a unique game which tested the navigational skills of the players. Their goal is to create a diagnostic tool for dementias like Alzheimer's.Within six months 2.5 million people had played and entered their background details giving scientist access to a vast well of data which would normally take years to accumulate.Lead scientist Dr. Hugo Spiers says the results shows that contrary to existing opinion, many of us start to see a deterioration in some brain functions when we are still young.Spiers who's running the ongoing study for University College London says: \"Nineteen, to 20, to 21 onwards, we see this slow decline in performance on our task.\"As we grow older the fear of dementia increases. There is nothing on the market that can significantly slow down or reverse the disease which robs people of their thoughts and memories. The cause of diseases like Alzheimer's is hotly disputed and we visited drug and therapeutic trials. One drug, solanezumab was found to be ineffective but other investigations to diagnose the disease early continue. The absence of medicinal solutions means the scientific community is strongly focussed on diagnosing the disease before it's had time to do serious damage to the brain. In Britain the National Institute for Health Research is funding programmes like this which use transcranial magnetic stimulation to develop early diagnosis of the disease. This trial is at the National Hospital for Neurology in London. At Lancaster these researchers on Alzheimer's are testing how people follow instructions with eyetracking.Technology can now track eye movements which can reveal secrets about the health of our brains and the way it may be deteriorating. This woman is retired, but still healthy, the scientists want to compare her responses with those of patients. The idea is to create an early diagnostic in the same way as the computer game. We've seen in Argentina how eye tracking technology is being used to dramatically improve the lives of children with neurological diseases. This computer device, known as Tobii is helping seven year old Ian Levi to communicate with eye movements.Levi performs actions by selecting objects on a screen, this way he's able to express his needs to others. At 16-years-old, Richard Tursi was paralysed when he crashed his motorcycle into a tree.Unable to move from the neck down, Tursi began therapy.Using mind-control technology, doctors were able to pinpoint where the brain's signals got stopped due to spinal cord damage. This year we saw how engineering students at the University of Florida are looking at how to use this specialist technology for a much wider consumer group. It's a prime example of how medicine and the consumer electronics feed off eachother and drive technology forward.Scientists at the University of British Columbia this year revealed they'd found a genetic mutation they believe causes a severe form of multiple sclerosis (MS), a neurological disease which affects the nerves. The hope is it shows at least one form of MS is inherited making early treatments possible in the future.MS is linked to over one hundred genes, but Associate Professor Dr. Anthony Traboulsee says:\"If we had a diagnostic test that could predict who's going to develop progressive MS, there's a good chance we could prevent that from occurring.\" Statins are widely prescribed by doctors to lower cholesterol, but the Institute of Cancer Research in the UK conducted laboratory experiments to show statins could be used in the treatment of breast cancer.Researchers believe it may help prevent the disease returning. They say common breast cancers may be using a cholesterol-based molecule to evade standard anti-hormone treatments, causing the disease to return in some patients. It's been stressful for office workers according to the British Psychological Society. The study says people feel obliged to answer emails before before they trudge into the city each morning and long after they return home in the evening. The health charity MIND finds similar results in its own research.Madeleine McGivern the head of Workplace Wellbeing says:\"At the moment one-in-six British workers is experiencing stress, anxiety, or depression.\"Office workers might find the new Los Angeles brain gyms help relieve the stress. Tapping is described as acupuncture without needles, people tap their faces and body while reciting mantras. If that's too much like hard work, then just lie back and lose yourself in the sounds of the Tibetan Singing Bowls.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
