Some sell (the processed charcoal) in the restaurants, or on the road because they understand the importance of producing less smoke - almost no smoke - so they use it in many different places. Wide of passing traffic LEADIN:Seven thousand deaths a year in Cambodia are linked to air pollution according to the World Health Organiation. Although it's not a heavily industrialised country, a building boom, traffic congestion and cooking fuels are blamed for the high figure.    STORYLINE: High rise concrete buildings and the busy streets below are obvious signs of a growing economy, but this is hardly the most industrialised nation.Here in Phnom Penh though, it is accompanied by a serious level of air pollution.In 2016 the Environmental Performance Indes (EPI) ranked 148th out of 180 for air quality. While factories and power plants are big polluters in many industrialised countries, heavy traffic, dust clouds from construction sites and smoke from burning biomass fuels are the biggest offenders in Cambodia. As the economy grows, car imports have risen steeply causing more congestion and pollution and the country is experiencing a construction boom with new buildings and roads being built.       Another big air polluter is cooking with biomass fuels such as charcoal and wood. Thousands of Cambodians earn money cooking food in street markets and most burn wood which is considered a dangerous polluter because it releases tiny particles into the air that are linked to respiratory disease.  Julien Jacquot is a Cambodia Director at environmentalist organisation GERES in charge of promoting better cooking solutions. \"The air pollution problem in Cambodia is multi factorial,\" he says. \"In cities like Phnom Penh it's due to traffic, to construction and from the dust blowing in from in the countryside in the dry season but it's also due to people cooking with inefficient appliances using charcoal causing the release of carbon particles that cause respiratory infections.\" The government says the WHO's figure of seven thousand deaths looks too high, but they lack the hard data to access the real numbers.   Speaking at the new Ministry of the Environment building in Phnom Penh Environment Minister Say Sam Al says improvements are being made.According to Al the government's increased its monitoring of industrial plants and is considering banning the importation of cars older than two years. But he says, the government is limited in what it can do due to the socio-economic conditions facing the country.   \"There's always more things that need to be done, needs to be accomplished, right?\" he says. \"I take that criticism but I think you have to look at our efforts as well and have to look at our present conditions - social and economic conditions of Cambodia. Look, we would like to do a couple of things to meet the standards of the West, let's say, right, but is that realistic? You know, is that…a large percentage of our population, whether they can tailor to what that situation, no I don't think so.\"    It may be a drop in the ocean but some companies are making efforts to address the problem of air pollution.  The Sustainable Green Fuel Enterprise (SGFE) has developed a green alternative to charcoal made from recycled coconuts shells. The shells are dried and crushed and carbonised in a specially designed burner. The carbonised shells are then crushed into a fine power and pressed into briquettes. The briquettes help reduce the loss of forests felled for charcoal production and because it is a smokeless fuel it produces less pollution when burned than wood charcoal.    \"Everyday people come to the factory to buy our charcoal and we also distribute it to dealers in the markets who either sell it on to restaurants or they sell it on the road,\" says Chum Vichet, the Manager of Sustainable Green Fuel Enterprise. \"People like it because they understand the importance of using fuel that produces less smoke - or in our case almost no smoke - when they cook. For that reason it's now used in many different places. Other benefits of our smoke-free charcoal are that it doesn't make your pots black and it doesn't make your kitchen dirty. It's also  better for your health and using it is cheaper over time because it burns longer than the traditional charcoal.\" Using smoke-free fuel is important for restaurants like 'Number 28' where the all cooking is done on solid fuel stoves in a confined space. The kitchen used to be filled with toxic fumes from burning charcoal says Len Hai the restaurant's owner.
