To start with, Abdul Ghani was alone. But he soon arranged for his wife and children to join him.\"The regime was responding to peaceful protests with bullets and it was arresting people and torturing them, so I was worried about my family. And I asked to bring them and they joined me in early 2012,\" he says.What was once a temporary solution for the family has started to look permanent, but adjusting to a new culture and a new language has been difficult. His wife, Ghadir, is a former primary school teacher but now stays at home.\"It's not easy to take care of the family alone, especially in this country where living conditions are so tough,\" she says.Abdul Ghani earns a living tutoring Quranic studies.It's difficult to make ends meet on his wages, but he believes many other Syrians in Ghana are in a worse financial position.Abdul Ghani also acts as the liaison between the Syrian refugee community and the Ghanaian government. He says there are no firm statistics on the number of Syrians in Ghana, but believes the figure is close to 1,000. Many are considering moving on to more developed countries though.\"Most of the Syrian people here are planning to leave Ghana and are just staying here temporarily because Ghana is not really ready to host refugees,\" he says.\"Not for all of them, but the ambition of some is to go to countries like Australia or Canada.\"But his 17-year-old son Mohammed Badenjki has adapted quickly to his new life.He's studying hard at school and managed to learn English in just five months.The Ghana Refugee Board oversees the refugees' care. Programme coordinator Tetteh Padi says more than 130 Syrians have been granted refugee status so far and other requests for asylum are being considered. Ghana's government has not provided food or lodging assistance to the community.But Padi says the state is \"protecting them\".\"We're issuing them with documentation, which is very critical,\" he says.Ghana feels like a second home to Abdul Ghani now. But he doesn't think he will stay forever.\"We just want the war to end so that one day we can go back to our country. But the war is not over yet and so we are still here and all I dream of is to go to another country.\" \"But I love Ghana and I am happy here. I came alone after things got harder because of the war and the revolution in Syria. And I sent help to my family so as to bring them because I was worried about them.
