Officers sitting in their lawyer's officeSTORYLINE:Purged from the Turkish military in the wake of the failed coup, four officers have been given asylum in Norway. With bank accounts frozen and successful careers suddenly cut short after July's attempted uprising, the former NATO officers posted to Norway face the possibility of never returning home, and an uncertain future as refugees. \"We must start with learning Norwegian, first. But at the same time, we're always thinking about what's happening in Turkey. So it's impossible for me to disconnect\", said one of the grouping, who all asked for anonymity.\"All of my friends - most of the friends are now in jail. And their families suffer because of this. And there is just one voice in Turkey, so no one hears their screams,\" he added. The men are among the cadre of commissioned officers they say Ankara blames for the failed coup.Considered suspects, scores of Turkish officers who were assigned to various NATO postings are refusing orders to return home. Instead, they are seeking asylum abroad or have gone into hiding, fearing they could be arrested and imprisoned as terrorists if they return. In March, Norway became the first NATO ally to grant asylum to some of the officers. Now trying to forge a life for themselves in Stavanger, a small coastal town on the country's west coast, the four mid-ranking officers, who have asked not to be named for fear of reprisals against their families, still bristle at being branded \"traitors\" and accuse Ankara of using the coup to crush critics. In the days and weeks that followed the coup, one of the men was dismissed by telephone, two watched in horror as their names appeared on 'blacklists' of military personnel ordered back to Turkey by email, and one received a call demanding he return to Turkey within three days.\"It wasn't a normal, official letter or way of doing business in the Turkish military. I got a call late Friday evening (saying) that I have to go back in three days to Turkey. And even though I wrote an official petition to get more information, to see an official letter, I didn't get any response back.\"In the atmosphere of panic and confusion, the men saw widely-shared social media videos of Turkish officers being tortured in jails, and desperately tried to reach military friends back home. They say some have disappeared or been forced to confess.\"In Turkey you have to prove your innocence,\" said one of the four. \"You are guilty until proven innocent.\"Each of the men was on leave when the plot unfolded and claim they have solid alibis, but say they had no choice but to seek protection in Norway. They filed for protection between August 13 and October 19.\"When I saw the list and my name in the list I tried to understand the reason. First, why am I in that list? But there was nothing about this on the paper. There were just one or two or three sentences. They were calling us back. Without any reason,\" says one. \"I was shocked and I came back home and gave the information to my wife and it was a terrible period for us, to digest this decision.\" He wanted to return to clear his name. \"My wife told me that it was not rational, it was not a smart decision to go back to Turkey.\"The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan alleges that the July 15 coup was carried out by followers of a US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who denies orchestrating a takeover. More than 150-thousand people have been taken into custody, fired or forced to retire from Turkey's armed forces, judiciary, education system and other public institutions in the months following. \"Norway can see what is going on,\" says one of the former officers, who said he was given asylum without needing to show any documents to prove he was in danger. Their lawyer, Kjell Brygfjeld believes the four cases have been fast-tracked through the sometimes clogged Norwegian asylum system. The case has raised the diplomatic temperature between the two countries, with Norway's ambassador made to explain the decision to the Ankara government. NATO pillars for more than 60 years, the two countries represent the alliance's northern and southern frontiers in Europe. Those pillars have been shaken.===========================================================Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further
