The pillar that is running through the centre of the minaret and has about 30 metres in length was made from a single oak tree. Just imagine how tall that oak tree must have been when (carpenters) managed to cut from it the pillar that is stretching from the bottom to the top of the minaret.\"  34. Various of mosque in sunset LEADINA unique mosque in Bosnia has stood the test of time, catering for thousands of visitors over its nearly 180 year history. But what makes this building special is that it has been built entirely out of wood, without the use of a single nail, screw or bolt.  STORYLINEThis is Buzim, a small town in north-western Bosnia that's home to an early 19th century mosque made entirely of interlocking wood. Erected in 1838, as an endowment of the then Ottoman governor of Bosnia, Mehmed Vecihi Pasha, the nearly 300-square-metre mosque can accommodate some 1,000 worshippers. Inside it's even more impressive with a balcony that folds around the entire length of its interior walls. The 1838 endowment charter, signed by the Ottoman governor, as well as a local judge and the first Imam of the mosque is still displayed inside a simple, handmade wooden frame. The mosque's current Imam, Emin Grosic, jokingly describes the historic documents as a de facto \"first construction permit\" issued for the mosque. The mosque was built by Bosnian carpenters who used locally-grown oak wood and traditional building methods. \"At the time, innovative (construction) techniques did not reach this remote area, so the builders resorted to the old, traditional building methods…therefore, no metal, not even a single nail, was used in the construction of this mosque,\" Grosic explains. \"If you find yourself in the mosque in the spring, when strong winds blow in this area, you can feel the mosque swaying and hear it squeaking like a wicker basket,\" he adds. While the mosque is typically full to capacity during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, its regular, small congregation mostly comprises elderly people drawn by its unique charm. \"I am used to praying in this mosque on Fridays and otherwise. I am used to praying in this mosque. Other, modern mosques have their own charm, I guess, but the allure of this one is unique,\" worshiper Ibrahim Sahinovic says. The wooden spiral staircase leading up to the minaret of the mosque hides another specific feature - a 30-metre-tall central pillar that it twists around was made from a single oak tree.
