The brothers want to build a structure that consists of several of these vaults. As many as a dozen or more would be built as a space for artists and writers.In their prototype vault, the two brothers have used stone blocks cut to unique dimensions and angles. Each stone performs the same function - it supports two other stones in the structure. \"This stone vault is the first that is built with this technique and at this scale in the world,\" Yousef says. \"It is made out of 300 mutually supported elements that are uniquely cut and placed on a polystyrene robotic carved formwork.\"The architects are returning to a Palestinian tradition with their work.Up until the middle of the 20th century, stone was the main building component. With the introduction of reinforced concrete and steel, some 70 years ago, stone stopped being part of the foundation of a structure. It became a cladding material, used to cover the concrete and steel skeleton of a structure.But at this modern quarry near Bethlehem, stone is still a valued commodity.Heavy machinery is used to cut large stone pieces into smaller ones. The precise cuts illustrate the use of stone in modern times. \"Stone was a link between construction and the natural heritage of Palestine actually, and gradually it became into something that is more related to the aspect of buildings and no more than something that anchors buildings into the landscape and into the urban scenery,\" says Elias.But the brothers have plenty of inspiration for building in stone if they take a look at some of the region's oldest buildings.The Church of Saint Anne in the of city of Jerusalem is a good example of its use.Built in 12th century, its exterior and interior are both made from the material. And its curved cupola echoes the vaults the brothers have designed.\"In the whole region we have many examples of vaults that are built in this principle and in Jerusalem we have this cupola in the church of Saint Anne that was built by the crusaders in the 12th century,\" says Yousef.\"It puts together architectural elements imported from the West and indigenous elements.\"The brothers hope their vaults will be another fusion of ideas.
