Doctors do not know if the malnourishment is a symptom of another condition, or what caused it, but she has not been responding to the basic treatments.A medical staff member at the Al-Thawra hospital in Hodeida, Yemen, checks her heartbeat to see how close to the end it might be.Her father has been trying to have her treated for severe diarrhoea for the past three years, but it has been piecemeal, from clinic to clinic and she never received a proper diagnosis.\"Jamila has been suffering from this sickness for three years, and we do not have the means to take her away (to get treatment). And I have kidney failure, and we are suffering from relapses. We do not have anything to even be able to make sure Jamila gets treatment,\" says Ali Abdu.And then Jamila is gone. Her father lifts the lightweight body onto a stretcher, to transport it home for burial.The doctors say if it was not for the war and her family's poverty, she might have lived. According to UNICEF, a child with severe acute malnutrition is eleven times as likely to die as a child without it.The war has pushed Yemen to the brink of famine, obliterated the health system, led to broad human rights violations and impeded imports of crucial food, resource and medicines.Aid groups want improved access to civilians, a halt to deadly airstrikes by a Saudi-led, US-supported coalition that has been fighting Shiite rebels known as Houthis, and more respect for international law.UN officials say the world's largest humanitarian crisis is in Yemen, where 17 million people are classified as food insecure, with seven million of those facing critical food shortages.The war pits the coalition of mostly Sunni Arab countries against the Iran-backed Houthis and army units loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. The Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and other areas in 2014, forcing the internationally-recognised government to flee.In the southern province of Hodeida, there are few advanced medical options.Jamila's family could not afford to take her to Sanaa, not to mention that the trip would include crossing the frontline.Now, there is nothing left for them to do but bury her, and accept condolences from friends and neighbours.Her mother had imagined a different life for the young girl, whose dream had been to return to school. They sold much of what they owned in an effort to get her treatment.\"She was very sick and I tried to get her treated at the hospitals and nothing helped, and as soon as we had any amount of money I would spend it to get her treatment. We sold the furniture and we sold the sheep and everything else. I wanted a healthy life for Jamila but we weren't able to obtain it,\" says Amal Ibrahim, Jamila's mother.Just a week before, Jamila had been sitting upright, and walking, though she was frail, and sometimes called out in pain.Her mother did her best to comfort her.Doctor Awsan al-Aariqi, said the medical staff in Hodeida did what they could for the child.\"The main cause of malnutrition for this child is that she's been suffering from diarrhoea for about two or three years, without any sort of diagnosis of Jamila. We started treating her according to the protocol for treating malnourished children, but for this child, unfortunately, there was no response to the treatment\" he said.According to UNICEF, over a thousand children under five die every week in the country from preventable diseases such as diarrhoea, malnutrition and respiratory tract infections.The conflict in Yemen has left more than 10-thousand dead and injured and displaced nearly three million people. The Arab world's poorest nation had already been suffering from high rates of malnutrition, and the war and a blockade imposed by a Saudi-led military coalition has pushed the country deeper into starvation and turmoil.The ward where Jamila stayed is full of infants, whose legs and arms are emaciated. And the situation is only worsening, according to Jan Egeland, the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council who has recently returned from a trip to Yemen.\"Half a million children are now acute, severe, malnourished. That is a euphemism for they are at the brink of dying from hunger. That's half a million, really. That number is increasing. And it's not just in certain pockets of the country.
