Soon they will be competing in freestyle rap battles on a poorly illuminated square in the \"City of God,\" one of Rio de Janeiro's most notorious and violent shantytowns. For the young men, rap is a way to express frustration with the violence that permeates their daily lives.Amid a sharp increase in violence in favelas, or shantytowns, millions of Rio residents are facing daily stresses akin to those in a war zone. Heavily armed drug traffickers battle for control of many favelas, and violent police operations add to the death toll and sense of fear. Last year, 920 people died during police raids or patrols in Rio state, more than double the 413 in 2013, according to Rio's Public Security Institute. And this year's figure is up by almost 60 percent over 2016.To document the psychological impact of the violence on favela residents, an Associated Press team spent eight days with two families in the City of God, a shantytown of about 50,000 residents made famous by the 2002 Oscar-nominated film of the same name and visited six years ago by then US President Barack Obama.Different than hundreds of other Rio favelas that grew out of squatter communities, City of God was built in the 1960s as a housing project for people who had been forced out of other favelas. It sits just a few miles from the Olympic Park in upscale Barra da Tijuca. Despite proximity to wealth, government services are practically non-existent. While teeming with residents, even during the day the streets are often empty because violence can erupt at any moment - residents even complain that police operations happen while children are in school.While many teens participate in rap battles to deal with the stress of violence, others cope by learning a musical instrument, participating in capoeira dance circles or taking university prep classes in a community centre. Capoeira teacher Fabiano da Silva volunteers in a community centre. At the age of seven, a capoeira teacher took him under his wing. \"Nothing better than to give back and help, in the same way that I was helped,\" says Da Silva, who also grew up in the impoverished area. Others create art or try to serve the most downtrodden among them, doing activities ranging from volunteering to cooking and offering free meals.Employees at the centre haven't been paid in three months, a situation common for thousands of workers in Rio state agencies. The centre has remained open thanks to an extraordinary effort of volunteers, who believe closing it would be a devastating blow.Isabela Maia, 10, says she gets nervous when her mother makes her and her two-year-old sister come inside during a shooting. Her outlet is learning to play the violin.\"I like violin lessons,\" said Maia, who practices each afternoon after doing her homework.Robson Luiz de Mendonca, 46, knows firsthand how life in a favela can consume loved ones. His son, 24, died in January of pulmonary problems after a crack addiction for many years.\"It's necessary to have a different vision for the people.
