The opulent sedan has driven the rich and powerful worldwide - from the Aga Khan to the Queen - but the latest model is...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEAD IN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Iconic British car maker Rolls-Royce is lifting the lid on its latest Phantom car.\u003cbr/\u003e              The opulent sedan has driven the rich and powerful worldwide - from the Aga Khan to the Queen - but the latest model is promising even more luxury.\u003cbr/\u003e              \u003cbr/\u003e              STORY-LINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              A curtain of lights reveals the newest benchmark of luxury car - the Rolls Royce Phantom.\u003cbr/\u003e              This is the latest in a long-line of Phantom models, stretching back 92 years.\u003cbr/\u003e              The new model is promising more luxury than ever before with even more options for customisation.\u003cbr/\u003e              One thing the Phantom isn't changing though is its enormous twin-turbo, 6.75-litre V12 engine.\u003cbr/\u003e              But in a world of increasingly tighter emissions legislation is there still a place on the road for large-capacity luxury cars like the Phantom?\u003cbr/\u003e              The UK government announced this week that it plans to phase out diesel and petrol cars by 2040 after lagging behind the rest of Europe in emissions.\u003cbr/\u003e              In this sense, is a thirsty 563hp engine something of a dinosaur in 2017?\u003cbr/\u003e              Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös says the luxury car company recognises its future is electric.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says: \"We already said that within the next decade Rolls-Royce will go electric and that's the route we're going to go but on the other side we are very keen to offer technology in a way to our clients which is effortless and without any compromises a Rolls-Royce is never about any compromises and for that reason when we think the time is right to bring electric into our vehicles, our cars, we will do so and that will happen within the next decade.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Rolls-Royce occupies a slightly different segment of the motor industry than other mass production car makers.\u003cbr/\u003e              It produces a much smaller number of vehicles at a price point that excludes all but the super rich.\u003cbr/\u003e              Müller-Ötvös recognises that at this moment in time his clients are looking for highly-complex combustion engines, which he compares to a luxury watch.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I mean we are here not what I would call a car business in its true sense we are here in what I would call a luxury goods business and you can even compare a 12 cylinder engine to a mechanical clock, a highly complicated mechanical clock and on the other side you also need to see that our cars don't carry lots of mileages all over the year. Our clients have multiple cars within their garages and for that reason they have all sorts of vehicles for all sorts of purposes in life. And one of these purposes is to be chauffeured and transferred and driven yourself in what is called the utmost when it comes to luxury, that is truly the Rolls-Royce Phantom,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Rolls-Royce claims the new aluminium construction of the Phantom is lighter, stiffer and quieter and produces an even more comfortable ride for the passenger. \u003cbr/\u003e              The new Phantom includes 130kg of sound insulation, including a 6mm double-layer glazing around the vehicle, to make the ride as quiet as possible. \u003cbr/\u003e              One of the design areas Rolls-Royce is particularly focusing on is the new 'Gallery' which aims to turn the car's dashboard into a bespoke artistic expression of the owner.\u003cbr/\u003e              A large sheet of glass across the central dash can accommodate an artwork, design or pattern.\u003cbr/\u003e              Designer Alex Innes explains: \"Well to my mind the most innovative element of the overall car design is the treatment of the instrument panel on the interior and this is where we have achieved an automotive first and it's never been done before and we have applied a beautifully simple but elegant application of glass that runs the full width of the fascia and emphasizes this proportion of width within the cabin itself and while the material is unique the really awe-inspiring ingenuity is the potential it allows for the placement of bespoke, it sits front and centre and it's the perfect stage.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The Phantom has been the chariot of choice for actors, heads of state, rock stars and royalty over its long history.\u003cbr/\u003e              To celebrate the launch of the new Phantom, Rolls-Royce has brought together a historic collection of some of the most iconic cars (and passengers) in its history.\u003cbr/\u003e              This 1965 Phantom V, with a paint scheme designed to look like a traditional gypsy caravan, belonged to rock star John Lennon.\u003cbr/\u003e              And this regal Phantom once carried Queen Elizabeth II on state duties. \u003cbr/\u003e              This 1936 Phantom belonged to Field Marshall Montgomery who commanded the British armies in World War II.\u003cbr/\u003e              So does the New Phantom sit comfortably in the long line of historic models?\u003cbr/\u003e              Motoring journalist Adam Hay-Nicholls who writes about luxury cars for the Metro and City AM newspapers thinks the new Phantom is targeting a slightly different audience.\u003cbr/\u003e              He believes the range of high-tech features will appeal to a younger demographic. For example the New Phantom includes an alertness assistant, a four-camera system for panoramic views around the car, night vision modes, collision and pedestrian warnings, lane change warnings, head-up display and rolling WiFi hotspot.\u003cbr/\u003e              Hay-Nicholls says: \"I think Rolls-Royce has started to gear itself much more towards silicone valley actually and high-tech and I understand that Rolls owners are getting younger and they're getting more interested in technology but what you've got with Rolls-Royce is all of that is behind the scenes, it's all behind the curtains. So unlike a Mercedes S-Class for example, you haven't got a ton of buttons in front of you.
