And now, you look at it and, again, having four, separate and distinct spaceflight entities working on human spaceflight, manufacturing occurring here, a satellite manufacturing plant with OneWeb and more coming over time. It's really just an amazing time and has been fun to be a part of that transformation.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              According to Engler, the Kennedy Center's history means more and more companies want to set up here to make the most of the benefits of being within reach of expertise on every level.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We have invested a lot as a center, as a nation, into Kennedy Space Center to ready us for that next 50 years of spaceflight and beyond,\" says Engler adding: \"And, you see the dividends of that now, these commercial companies buying into what we're doing, working with the Air Force to create streamlined procedures.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              NASA is now focusing its operations on deep space, developing the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft for flights which include Mars.\u003cbr/\u003e              At the same time private companies such as Blue Origin, Boeing and SpaceX are preparing to send people to low Earth orbit.\u003cbr/\u003e              Boeing is building the CST-100 Starliner, a spacecraft that will send astronauts to the International Space Station. Atlas V, one of the world's most reliable rockets, will launch the Starliner.\u003cbr/\u003e              Chris Ferguson, a former NASA astronaut and director of crew and mission operations at Boeing says:  \"Commercial spaceflight is the commercial companies, they operate with the assistance of NASA but they do all of the development and in the very end they own all of the IP, the intellectual property that allows us to go back and forth. So we can subsequently sell that service initially to NASA astronauts but then, where do you go from there? Perhaps space tourism? Perhaps selling the service to a government that cannot afford the infrastructure of a space program of their own? Perhaps to industry? It opens up a whole new world of business.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              New investment is now going in according to Tony Taliancich from United Launch Alliance. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"In order to support the commercial crew program we built this structure the crew access tower, to be able to get astronauts from the ground up to the capsule itself on top of the rocket. It's about 170 feet up off the ground. This facility has an elevator that brings them up here, they get prepared, get their flight suits on, get all their last minute activities done,  just like they did for the shuttle and the other programs. Then they walk out on the crew access arm into a white room, and that white room they completely close up and get themselves ready to strap into the capsule,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Kathy Leuders, the manager of the commercial crew program, is convinced Cape Canaveral is becoming a hub for a whole new industry.\u003cbr/\u003e              She says: \"This is not just the spaceport where the shuttle launches, this is the spaceport where ULA launches, and SpaceX launches, and Blue Origin has a facility coming and is building a pad, and it's where there's, you know, where a robust space industry is really, now, coming. I mean, people are talking about kind of the new space race happening right here on our coast here in Florida.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Leuders is also optimistic about the future: \"Twenty years from now, we're going to look back at this period where people kind of saw that the Space Coast was dying, we're going to realize how much it's kind of resurged in the last five or six years, huge transformation going on here.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Several flight tests, including a crewed mission, are planned for Boeing and SpaceX in 2018.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Cape Canaveral, Florida, US — 14 July 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
