But Palestinian activists are critical that the response to...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said the Palestinians will not accept any role for the United States in a peace process with Israel.\u003cbr/\u003e              But Palestinian activists are critical that the response to Trump's announcement on the status of Jerusalem has so far been too weak.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Songs of protest at Damascus Gate.\u003cbr/\u003e              Palestinians have been demonstrating here every day since Donald Trump announced the US would recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.\u003cbr/\u003e              But so far, these events have been small in size.\u003cbr/\u003e              They are nothing compared to the scenes of last July when tens of thousands of Palestinians protested here after Israel attempted to install metal detectors near Al-Aqsa Mosque. \u003cbr/\u003e              Protests in the West Bank have relatively been small in size as well. \u003cbr/\u003e              Nihaya Qawasmi, a Palestinian activist, puts the blame on the Palestinian Authority and the various Palestinian political groups for the weak response. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We are not seeing any of the groups - not Fatah, not Hamas, not the Popular Front, not the Democratic Front - we are just on our own,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I think this has been cooked up behind our backs in order to let the American decision pass in return that salaries continue to be paid and Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President) remain in power.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Ahamd Abu Saloum, a Palestinian artist and a resident of Jerusalem has witnessed previous uprisings. \u003cbr/\u003e              He believes that people are still not aware of the ramifications of the US position on Jerusalem, but he senses a reaction is slowly building. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It seems that the people are awaiting a response from the summits and meetings, but I tell them all the summits outside of Palestine and outside Al-Quds and all the protests abroad will not yield anything if we ourselves do not protest this.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The Israeli police has stepped up its presence in East Jerusalem in the wake of Trump's Jerusalem speech last Wednesday. \u003cbr/\u003e              Palestinian flags and anti-Trump posters are routinely confiscated and destroyed. Arrests have also been made. \u003cbr/\u003e              Nearly 40 percent of Jerusalem's residents are Palestinian. \u003cbr/\u003e              The majority of them do not hold Israeli citizenship and are not allowed to vote in national elections. They hold a shaky 'resident status' instead.
