All of them require constant care and attention throughout the year.
Patrick Renault is the spokesman for King Philippe of Belgium.
He says the Laeken Greenhouses are the biggest of their kind in continental Europe and an outstanding endeavour by Neoclassical architect, Alphonse Balat.
"It's not just a spectacular complex made by (Belgian architect Alphonse) Balat, something that marks the beginning of the Art Nouveau. The buildings are extraordinary, the garden is one of the most exceptional, beautiful and one of the country's biggest and so is the collection of flowers and plants, as you can see here. For example camellia flowers and the orange groves are among the most exquisite, important and diverse collections in Europe," he says.
"For example, camellia flowers and the orangeries are among the most exquisite, important and diverse collections in Europe."
The greenhouses are a home for 300 camellias, over 600 potted plants, 760 geraniums and 190 fuchsias.
With their nature-inspired design, the greenhouses are an example of Belgian Art Nouveau. This architectural style fully blossomed in late 19th century Belgium, thanks to the imagination of Belgian architect Victor Horta, Balat's student.
The cupola-shaped greenhouses were built in different stages from 1874 to the early 1900s, and are connected to each other by a network of glass encased galleries.
King Leopold II of Belgium came up with the idea for their construction, and his plan was implemented by Balat, his personal architect.
The whole complex is a product of Belgium's colonial past and partly stems from a desire to recreate at home the botanical environment of far-away lands.
Leopold II gave his own personal input to the Greenhouses' building. The initial design is the result of an exchange of letters and meetings between the sovereign and Balat.
Michel Dekens is the Laeken Royal Estate Manager. He says the Winter Garden greenhouse, with its crown-topped dome, was the first to be erected.
"Construction began in 1874 with the construction of the biggest greenhouse, the Winter Garden. It's the greenhouse behind us, it was built between 1874 and 1876. It's huge", Dekens says.
This year's opening features some novelties, including renewed access to the Congo Greenhouse; the site's glass and iron structures have required maintenance and restoration for some time, but the public will finally be able to see it again.
"Several years ago the Congo Greenhouse has been closed for renovation. Works haven't been completed yet but this year we've decided to open it to the public", Renault explains.
The Congo Greenhouse was built from 1886 to 1888 and takes its name from the African country that was a Belgian colony at the time.
It shelters lush subtropical vegetation, including palms from Australia and China and several species of ferns.
This year a special route through the site has also been designed to facilitate access for people with a walking disability.
"We've launched a very important initiative for people with reduced mobility: we propose - there's no obligation, but we suggest - a shorter tour that's been tailored to their needs. This is a first for us. We've continued to improve and extend the spaces that are reachable by the public. But it's clear that everyone has access to every part of the greenhouses," Renault explains.
The tailor-made tour will be available throughout the three-weeks opening.
In addition, on 8 May those with reduced mobility will be offered a more extensive visit of the site that will cover most of the estate.
Something else new this year is a seedling taken from a tree recovered at the feet of the New York Twin Towers soon after the 11 September 2001 attacks.
The little tree was offered to Belgium on 22 March 2018 on the second anniversary of the Brussels 2016 attacks and was donated by the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York.
The Royal Greenhouses are tended to by 60 gardeners and experts who work all year round at the site.
Greenhouses hosting tropical plants, in particular, need plenty of light and heat, a rare commodity during Belgium's dark and cold winters.
Tropical plants are kept at a constant temperature of 18 centigrade (64.4 Fahrenheit) during the day.
The site doubles as a reception location for some of the most important functions the Belgian royal family plays host to.
"Whenever possible, whenever the weather allows, these greenhouses are used for big official and family events," Renault explains.
"For example, many European Union meetings or at that level have taken place in these greenhouses.
