They show off traditions inherited from their ancestors such as music and dancing.             ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN\u003cbr/\u003e              The last Berbers of the Mitidja region, near the capital Algiers, meet every 1 May to celebrate spring.\u003cbr/\u003e              They show off traditions inherited from their ancestors such as music and dancing.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE\u003cbr/\u003e              On 1 May every year the last Berbers of the Mitidja region meet on a mountain known to be foggy and cold all year round.\u003cbr/\u003e              They're here to celebrate spring.\u003cbr/\u003e              They mark their existence by showing off traditions inherited from ancestors, such as dancing with sticks and guns and performing instrumental music.\u003cbr/\u003e              Beni Salah, Ghalay, Beni Messaoud and Beni Missra are the names of the last Berber or Amazigh tribes living on the mountains of Chrea in a region called \"Haoudh\" (70 kilometres south of Algiers). They all gather here on this date for the event.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"These lands belong to the tribes of Ghalay, it's a historical group,\" explains local guide, Amin Bensouna.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"So they (the tribes) meet here and celebrate spring, they mark their presence and show their roots to their ancestors.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The event is also an opportunity for parents to find a wife or husband for their sons and daughters, so it's also a very important day socially.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Our ancestors used to come here and reconcile between them,\" says local tribe member Tayeb Slimane Bachir.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They used to bring traditional butter, honey, figs, oak etc.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The tribes were traditionally warriors and kept their own social habits, away from urban life.\u003cbr/\u003e              Only the older tribe people still speak the Tamazight language.\u003cbr/\u003e              There are still many Berbers present in the Kabylia region today, but there are fewer than 1,000 across the region of Mitidja.  \u003cbr/\u003e              But every year, on 1 May, they gather their families and children and organise activities including dancing the warrior's dance with sticks, horse racing and playing traditional music on flutes.\u003cbr/\u003e              Abdelkader Izamin is a famous dancer from his tribe and says he remembers these traditions from the day he was born.\u003cbr/\u003e              His ancient ancestors used to dance the same way as him centuries ago.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Chrea, Algeria - 1 May 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1. We're 5 kilometres to the south of the Chrea mountains, it's a green field surrounded by oak and cedar forests. All the tribes gather here such as Beni Salah, Ghalay, Beni Messaoud and Beni Missra (names of tribes). These lands belong to the tribes of Ghalay, it's a historical group. So they (the tribes) meet here and celebrate spring, they mark their presence and show their roots to their ancestors.
