But a closer look reveals a marine environment in crisis.\u003cbr/\u003e              A combination of habitat destruction and mostly illegal overfishing has seen fish and other marine life almost disappear from many areas. \u003cbr/\u003e              Coral reefs that were once teeming with fish are now virtually empty.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Locals say that most of the damage is being done by big trawlers from Thailand and Vietnam who are reportedly allowed to fish illegally in return for generous kickbacks paid to the Cambodian navy.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Many big boats use trawling nets which scrape along the seabed, destroying everything in their path, including important fish breeding grounds.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Englishman Scott Jennings has been running daily boat tours of the area for almost five years. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I do know they used to do dynamite fishing here as well, a lot of trawling. From my knowledge of local people, the sea here has been completely sucked dry from fish, especially squid as well because it is locally eaten.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              Some squid is sold locally where it is a popular street-food snack - usually barbecued over charcoal and served with garlic chilli sauce.  \u003cbr/\u003e              But locals say that most of the squid caught illegally off Cambodia ends up on dinner plates in Thailand or Vietnam.\u003cbr/\u003e              Squid stocks in both countries have been heavily depleted by overfishing, forcing their big squid boats to venture further afield into Cambodian waters.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I buy it from the market and I put it on sticks and sell it on the beaches,\" says squid seller Sochea Hin. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"My customers are both foreigners and Cambodians. They all love to eat it.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              Ong village in Riem National Park near Sihanoukville is one of the last remaining fishing villages in the area that still relies almost exclusively on squid. \u003cbr/\u003e              Early each morning the fishermen set off for one of several well-known squid fishing grounds located 10 - 15 kilometres off the coast to pull in the fishing lines they put out the previous evening. \u003cbr/\u003e              Local fishermen say that there are still squid to be found in some areas, but that they are becoming scarcer since the arrival of big squid boats, mostly from Vietnam.\u003cbr/\u003e              Squid fisherman Bun Chai says he has started to catch other seafood in addition to squid to support his family.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Since the big Vietnamese boats came here I've been catching less squid,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"This year I have changed what I normally do and I also put out crab nets. I'm also fishing more with lines and hooks. I'm getting some decent crabs. I was getting less squid so I switched what I was doing.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Experts say that the decline of the squid population is a bad sign because squid are usually quite resilient.\u003cbr/\u003e              Squid live near the ocean floor which is typically the last area to be heavily fished after more accessible depths are first depleted. \u003cbr/\u003e              Some fishermen here connect electric cables to their nets to shock the last remaining sea life into jumping out of the seabed so that they can be caught in the nets. \u003cbr/\u003e              Smaller squid boats use shells attached to a line which is laid onto the seabed overnight. \u003cbr/\u003e              The squid crawl into the empty shells which are hauled out of the sea with a pulley.\u003cbr/\u003e              Each boat collects around 10 kilograms of squid each day which they sell for about $5 a kilo.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Collectively, hundreds of kilograms of squid are being pulled from the ocean here everyday.  \u003cbr/\u003e              The fishermen can earn between $500 and $600 per month which is about twice the average monthly wage of people working on the land. \u003cbr/\u003e              The wages are better, but it's getting harder all the time says squid fisherman Khy Atith.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Ten years ago there was a lot of everything in the sea but now there are too many boats. There are a lot of squid boats here in particular so there is not so much squid anymore. Yes there's still some for sure but less than before. There's just a little now.\"  \u003cbr/\u003e              According to Marine Conservation Cambodia, the area could quickly recover if the proper conservation procedures are put in place. \u003cbr/\u003e              In February the government announced the creation of Cambodia's first marine park covering the waters off Sihanoukville and there are high hopes that this will help the regeneration of the area. \u003cbr/\u003e              The project promises 30 new full-time rangers to patrol both the coastal land areas and the waters of the marine park according to Cambodia's Ministry of Environment.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Sihanoukville, Cambodia, March 27th 2018.\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
