In the 1600s Rubens' bold and dramatic approach to art burst into life across hundreds of canvasses.   ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN\u003cbr/\u003e              A new festival in Belgium is paying homage to the Baroque style of master painter Peter Paul Rubens.\u003cbr/\u003e              In the 1600s Rubens' bold and dramatic approach to art burst into life across hundreds of canvasses.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE\u003cbr/\u003e              An oversize painting vividly projecting both cruelty and compassion stands tall in the studio room of the Rubens House museum in Antwerp.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The Martyrdom of St. Andrew\" by Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens is here on loan from Spain as part of the Baroque festival that begins on 1 June in the Belgian city. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Antwerp Baroque 2018. Rubens Inspires\" celebrates the artistic movement and the Flemish master who transformed Antwerp into a Baroque treasure. \u003cbr/\u003e              The festival boasts an ambitious program that is unfolding over the course of six months; it includes exhibits, walking tours of Antwerp's churches as well as museums, concerts, performances and even Baroque-inspired murals.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Organizers say while there have been other Baroque events in Antwerp this is the largest. \u003cbr/\u003e              With its dramatic scene seemingly bursting out of the frame, \"The Martyrdom of St. Andrew\" is an apt example of the Baroque style that swept through the art and architectural world in the 17th Century. \u003cbr/\u003e              Inspired by theatre, Baroque favoured unfiltered emotions and portrayed characters caught wide-eyed in the heat of the moment: anguished, desperate, elated, yearning. \u003cbr/\u003e              The style blossomed in churches and royal courts in the years of the Counter-Reformation in Europe and Latin America. \u003cbr/\u003e              Baroque was a reaction to the idyllic perfection of Renaissance art of the 1500's; as if a century later humanity had suddenly discovered that life is unpredictable, surprising, painful and sensual. \u003cbr/\u003e              The style developed in Italy thanks to the painter Caravaggio and sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. \u003cbr/\u003e              Nele Vervoort is an an expert at Rubens' House Educational Department. She says the festival centres around the figure of Rubens, one of the most important Baroque painters of all times. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The name of the festival is 'Baroque 2018; inspired by Rubens'. So he's the most important person in Antwerp concerning Baroque. After him many artists looked at him and they learned a lot from his work,\" Vervoort says. \u003cbr/\u003e              Rubens was born in Germany but relocated to his parents' hometown of Antwerp, what was then the Spanish Netherlands. \u003cbr/\u003e              After completing his artistic training, the artist left for Italy where he remained for eight years. \u003cbr/\u003e              In Venice Rubens got up close with the works of Titian and Tintoretto. In Rome, where Baroque was born and in full bloom, he was introduced to Caravaggio's and Annibale Carracci's masterpieces. \u003cbr/\u003e              After his Italian experience, Rubens returned to Antwerp a changed man. \u003cbr/\u003e              His exposure to Baroque's greatest artists proved a pivotal moment in his career and brought a sweeping revision of his painting style. \u003cbr/\u003e              Ben van Beneden, the director of the Rubens House museum, praises Rubens' artistic prowess and unparalleled intensity. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"He's so rich, he's so layered, he's so vast that you can actually keep on staring (at) Rubens and every time you find that you discovered something new,\" van Beneden says. \u003cbr/\u003e              Rubens quickly introduced Baroque to the Flanders; he was an endless source of inspiration for his contemporaries who contributed to change and defined the city's appearance based on the new style.   \u003cbr/\u003e              Churches, cathedrals and homes in Antwerp suddenly filled up with Baroque artworks. \u003cbr/\u003e              It was a triumph of abundance with dark wood sculptures, elaborately adorned altars overflowing with metal and gold, statues and paintings, displaying colours as bold as the feelings they portrayed. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Rubens was very important to bring Baroque to the north of the Alps. He learned a lot in Italy also from the antique masters, from antique sculptures, and when he came back he brought Baroque with him,\" Vervoort explains. \u003cbr/\u003e              Rubens House boasts a large collection of 17th Century Flemish painters. \u003cbr/\u003e              The museum is located on Rubens' former house and studio and features many of the master's own paintings. \u003cbr/\u003e              Rubens House is visited by 200,000 people a year, most of whom come from abroad. \u003cbr/\u003e              Seeing the artist's masterpieces from the place where they were created is a perfect reason to visit Antwerp, says Vervoort. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Rubens still is the most famous person from Antwerp. People from all over the world come to Antwerp to see the place where he lived and he worked. Because you can find paintings of Rubens everywhere but Antwerp is the place where he made all those paintings,\" Vervoort explains. \u003cbr/\u003e              The works of Flemish artists such as Jacob Jordaens were heavily influenced by Rubens; many painters trained at the master's studio, including young Anthony van Dyck, who went on to become one of Flemish Baroque's greatest. \u003cbr/\u003e              Van Beneden says Flemish painters followed Rubens' lead and succeeded in setting their style apart from all others, creating their own Baroque signature.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"What we see here was for Antwerp and the Netherlands completely new, imported from Italy but with this very idiosyncratic interpretation.
