STORYLINE          ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN\u003cbr/\u003e              Human right groups have alleged that the French government has supplied military and surveillance equipment to Egypt.\u003cbr/\u003e              They claim it's being used to silence their citizens.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE\u003cbr/\u003e              The Paris-based International Federation for Human Rights and three other groups are making some disturbing claims in a report released today (Monday).\u003cbr/\u003e              They allege the French government and several private companies have supplied military and surveillance equipment which the Egyptian government uses to silence its citizens.\u003cbr/\u003e              The groups are calling for an immediate end to the sales and for a parliamentary inquiry in France.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I consider this report, this document, as a wake-up call for the French government, for the French Parliament and for the French public opinion,\" says Bahey Eldin Hassan, Director of Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies.\u003cbr/\u003e              In the report they allege that the French products \"have helped establish\" a system of surveillance and control \"that is being used to eradicate all forms of dissent and citizen action\".\u003cbr/\u003e              France has sold warships, fighter jets, armoured vehicles, missiles and surveillance technologies to Egypt in recent years.\u003cbr/\u003e              Giving examples of the alleged surveillance equipment Antoine Madelin, International Advocacy Director at FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights) describes:\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Sensors that are placed all around Egypt and thanks to a sophisticated technology allow the reception of all communication conducted by individuals.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The Egyptian government has fiercely cracked down on dissent since the military overthrow of an elected and divisive Islamist president in 2013. Thousands of Islamists have been arrested along with secular pro-democracy activists, many of whom are now in prison.\u003cbr/\u003e              General-turned-President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi was elected to a second term in March. According to Hassan:\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The military regime of General Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is responsible of mass killings of thousands, extrajudicial exclusions, forced disappearance, systematic torture and the imprisonment of around 60,000 Egyptians.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The French government has argued that security and military cooperation with Egypt is needed to fight extremist groups which encourage violent acts and to prevent further destabilisation of the region.\u003cbr/\u003e              In 2010, deliveries of French weapons were worth 39.6 million Euros (46.2 million US Dollars).
