The Indian mathematician Pingala found the sequence at least 1,000 years before (probably 200 BC) while analyzing Sanskrit poetry. This video describes how the sequence arises from metrical analysis. Blog post (includes extended rant about the name) Video notes. Note 1: I chose the words \"rice, om, thug, cot\" because they are derived from Sanskrit. Note 2: The video simplifies the analysis. There is a system for determining long (guru) and short (laghu) syllables. Note 3: I really wanted to make the video to be 3:58 so it would be all numbers from the Pingala sequence. But I made it in 3:44, and I did not want to add 13 seconds of filler. Note 4: Pingala does not seem to get much credit, even though he also described binary numbers, the so-called Pascal's triangle, and de Bruijn sequences long before their discovery in Western mathematics. I did, however, find someone has constructed a fountain in India to commemorate Pingala Note 5: Pingala does get credit in Wikipedia's entry as the origins of the Fibonacci sequence Note 6: The tech company Persistent System, headquartered in Pune, India, actually has a building called Pingala-Aryabhata to honor these two Indian mathematicians. If you like my videos, you can support me at Patreon Connect on social media.
