View more films on BFI Player (UK only) Excerpt from \"Lahore, 1936: Gorrie Personal Film No. 37 (1936)\" An eclectic personal film including depictions of religious festivals and British life in India. Opening with a view of the Muharram procession in the Lahore bazar, this eclectic amateur film gives us close ups of the dressed up horse, the tazia and large crowds of people beating chests in mourning. From this public scene of Indian religious life, we cut to white children playing in the park alongside their ayahs and a few Indian children. The film also records a military parade and the Hindu Dussehra Festival in Lahore. Filmmaker Robert Maclagen Gorrie (1897-1970) was from Edinburgh and worked in the Indian Forest Service. Shot at close quarters, his films reflect his immersion in the cultural, social or religious events around him. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Where there is a sizeable Shia community, the occasion is marked with a taziya procession on the 10th day of Muharram to commemorate the Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of the Prophet’s grandson Imam Hussein. The British were fascinated by the theatricality and hybridity of the taziya procession in India and also fearful of the power of religion and community when they came together at festival times. The film provides a close up of various events in the lives of British children in India including play time, parties etc. Interesting in the film are also the omnipresent figure of the ayah who are seen minding, lugging or patiently waiting for the children.
