But what does it do? At a basic level, today’s nuclear reactors break or split atoms. This process, called nuclear fission, releases the energy that holds an atom together – an energy called strong force. As you might guess from the name, this force binding protons and neutrons is enormously powerful. But it isn’t invincible. Bombarding atoms with neutrons can break the bonds, releasing energy. Particles from split atoms can shoot away, splitting other atoms, creating a self-sustaining chain reaction. The energy emitted here heats water to about 271 C, turning it into steam. The steam turns turbines, generating electricity. Leó Szilárd first discovered this idea, and he worked with Enrico Fermi and others to create the first man-made, self-sustaining chain reaction at the University of Chicago. This reactor was called Chicago Pile 1.
