On the one side the Soviet troops weren't able to gain control over the huge country. On the other side, the US, via the CIA, and the Arab countries supported guerrilla fighters with arms deliveries. These militias called themselves Mujahideen and thought that they are fighting a Holy War against the infidel communists.
