Featuring Oscar and BAFTA-winning film director, producer and screenwriter James Ivory, producer and life-long friend Catherine Freeman, and award-winning author Anita Desai. With live readings from Simon Callow and Felicity Kendal. Chaired by broadcaster and journalist Razia Iqbal. We are delighted that the Ruth Prawer Jhavala archive has recently been donated to the British Library. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (1927-2013) is the only woman to have won two Academy Awards for best screenplay adaptations and a Booker Prize. These awards were for E M Forster’s A Room with a View in 1986, Howard’s End in 1992, and for the 1975 novel Heat and Dust. She also received a BAFTA in 1984 for adapting her novel for the screen. Born in Cologne, Ruth arrived as a refugee to Britain in 1939, but spent almost equal periods of her life in England, to which she credited her learning and love of the English language, in Delhi where she lived with her husband and three daughters and New York where she eventually settled with her husband after their daughters left home. Her prolific creative output includes 12 novels, eight volumes of short stories and 25 screenplays (22 of which are films). Her fiction crosses boundaries of culture and of place and shows the wit and psychological insight of a diasporic rootless observer. Her adaptations for the Merchant Ivory Productions, which showed stunning attention to detail, were meticulous at bringing these books to life. Portrait of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala by Fay Godwin\n
