On the one hand, China was coming after a humiliating...\nThis video covers the economics behind China (or, to be more precise, the People's Republic of China or PRC) under the rule of Mao Zedong and the Communist Party of China (CPC). On the one hand, China was coming after a humiliating period of concessions on all front and Mao Zedong wanted it to regain its dignity. On the other hand, disastrous policies such as the Great Leap Forward (which resulted in the famine with the most deaths in history) and the Cultural Revolution made things complicated. Toward the end of his life, Mao Zedong did certain things differently (for example, steps toward the US in light of his concerns with respect to the USSR) and after his death, the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party had to make a choice: on the one hand, ideologically-driven nationalism, something promoted by the faction which among others was led by Mao Zedong's wife and on the other hand, a more pragmatic approach. A difficult choice for the People's Republic of China for sure, one which led to the Chinese story as we know it today, but more on that in the final video of my mini-series on China.
