Where did these popular decorations come from? How did they come to be such a large part of the Christmas tradition? One of the most popular Christmas decorations is the wreath. The origins of the wreath are found in German folk practices. During the cold months of winter, they would create evergreen wreaths as a symbol of continued life. The circle shape of the wreath represented the continuous cycle of the changing seasons. In some regions, the wreath was placed on a flat surface, such as a table, with candles placed in it (usually four candles with a fifth in the center). Mistletoe is also commonly used as a Christmas decoration. The use of mistletoe seems to have been rare until the 1700s, but the plant has been quite common since then. According to the tradition, a man and a woman who meet under the mistletoe are required to kiss. It was also a tradition to leave the mistletoe hanging in the home throughout the year, as many believed the plant could bring good luck. Tinsel is also used in many different ways to adorn homes around Christmas time. The first tinsel was made in 1610 and was originally made from shredded silver. It was often added to Christmas trees to enhance the flicker of the candles. However, the metallic tinsel was fragile and very expensive. Only the wealthiest of families could afford to use it to decorate their homes. During the 1900s, as tinsel continued to become more and more affordable, it quickly became one of the most widely used decorations. It appeared not only on Christmas trees, but draped across mantles as well as being wrapped around pillars. Another common decoration hit the scene in 1825. That year, the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Joseph Poinsett, brought a plant back to the United States which almost instantly became a part of the American Christmas tradition.
