Although they didn’t serve in the war together, they share a story of courage — on and off the battlefield. They met at a transgender veterans’ support group, and after hours of talking over coffee, they became inseparable. Since coming out, both Sue and Kristyn have lost contact with family members, but they’ve formed a powerful, enduring sisterhood. This story is part of our STONEWALL OUTLOUD collection. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in June 1969, StoryCorps is working to preserve the personal histories of members of the LGBTQ community. Our goal is to show gratitude to our elders while creating a vitally important archive of LGBTQ stories – so people can honor experiences like Sue McConnell and Kristyn Weed’s.
