The 25-year-old invented a floating device that catches garbage before it reaches the sea when he was just 18 years old, and now he is expanding his mission to rivers too. The Ocean Cleanup’s original mission was to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, but after realizing rivers are the main source of plastic going into the ocean, The Ocean Cleanup decided it was time to come up with a new, additional idea to tackle river plastic pollution. And so, the latest plastic collecting invention is called the Interceptor—the mechanism scoops plastic from rivers as it drifts past, and then when it is full, it can shoot a text to the operator alerting that it needs to be emptied before continuing.
