Download yours today The transverse sinus is a bilaterally paired collection of venous plexuses travelling on both sides in the base of the tentorium cerebelli, in a groove along the inner surface of the occipital bone. It belongs to the dural venous sinuses and therefore receives and transports venous blood from the brain. Like the other dural venous sinuses the transverse sinuses are valveless. It is also called lateral sinus, due to its location away from the sagittal plane and its horizontal course. The transverse sinus arises at the confluence of sinuses at the level of the internal occipital protuberance and continues laterally and anteriorly as it empties into the sigmoid sinus.
