Organs on a chip systems could transform the medical drug pipeline as we know it. Biomedical engineer Ali Khademhosseini explains how he and his team at MIT are engineering tissues outside of the human body and connecting different \"organs\" to solve some pressing challenges.

Ideally, Dr. Khademhosseini is aiming to mimic the human body. He and his team are working to have different tissue types present and to connect them just like they are in the human body.

Designing organs on a chip systems certainly come with a number of challenges. One is getting the right cell that will be functional and predictive of what the effect of the chemical is on those cells. Another is to get the different cells to work with each other and make the functioning tissue. To address this challenge, Dr. Khademhosseini and his team take the cells and put them in a 3D environment, known as hydrogels. The cells then see each other, communicate and eventually form the right kind of organ structure.
