The organization, based in Washington,...\nVincent Scheivert has been named the 2015 recipient of the Withrow Award by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), a national professional association for school system technology leaders. The organization, based in Washington, D.C., represents over 10 million students in school divisions across the county.
The award is named for Frank Withrow, a long-time educator and pioneer in the application of technology to improve classroom learning opportunities. Withrow served for 26 years in the U.S. Department of Education and also was the director of development for NASA’s Classroom of the Future. The Withrow Award recognizes an exceptional Chief Information Officer (CIO) in the nation who serves as a technology champion and whose leadership has been transformative for his or her school system.
“Vince Scheivert certainly has transformed learning in a diverse school division covering more than 700 square mountainous and rural miles,” CoSN said in making the award. Among the achievements noted by the association is Scheivert’s work in narrowing the digital divide that separates students in the county, his progress in strengthening student connectivity at home through a one-to-one technology initiative, and his launching of a free computer coding academy open to all public school students in Albemarle.
“I am proud to accept this award on behalf of our school division’s entire leadership and technology teams,” Scheivert said. “It is their hard work and support that make next-generation progress possible in our school division.”
“The learning pathways unlocked by technology are impressive: High-speed Internet empowers drama students to Skype with and learn from award-winning Broadway actresses; to gain eyewitness accounts about the Arab Spring from a participant in Cairo’s central square; to replicate Civil War battlefields using 3D printing; to engage in online discussions with university scientists; and to collaborate around the clock with their peers on student-designed projects,” Scheivert added.
Since joining the school division in 2010, Scheivert has improved service response times by the Department of Accountability, Research and Technology; reduced the cost of computers to the division; instituted a new student assessment and data analysis system that reduced costs and increased ease of use; and initiated a technology internship program for students. In addition to serving as the school division’s CIO, Scheivert is a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet, the board of directors for the Charlottesville Business Innovation Council, and the Albemarle County task force to expand community access to high-speed Internet service.
Prior to joining Albemarle County Public Schools, Scheivert led school division technology implementation programs in Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia. He is a graduate of Temple University and earned his master’s degree from George Washington University.\n
