The first panel, The Big Picture: Challenges and Opportunities in Graduate Education, six distinguished, award-winning researchers from universities across the country present their NSF-funded findings and perspectives on graduate education. These presentations include important trends in graduate education and the US workforce, new approaches to graduate student training, preparing students for academic as well as non-academic careers, and ways in which to broaden participation and retain talented students in STEM fields. Panelists include Julia Lane of NYU (“Using evidence in science policy to fix the incentives for graduate education”), Henry Sauermann of Georgia Tech (“The supply side of STEM labor markets: Ph.D. students' career preferences”), David Feldon of Utah State U (“Applying research data to research training”), Ann Q. Gates of U Texas El Paso (“Broadening participation in graduate studies”), Nilsa Bosque-Perez of U. Idaho (“Lessons learned from interdisciplinary team-based doctoral education”) and Colin Phillips of U. Maryland College Park (“All careers are alternative nowadays”).\n
